The possibility of eliminating the long-term part of the waste presents an appealing opportunity to the sustainability and acceptance of a better and cleaner source of energy. It is shown that the proposed pebble-bed transmutator has suitable characteristics to transmute most of the isotopes that contribute to the long-term radioactivity. This proposed reactor presents also inherent safety characteristics, which is a necessary element in a new reactor design to be accepted by the society. Throughout this paper, we will characterise the new reactor concept, and present some of the neutronics and safety characteristics of an accelerator driven pebble-bed reactor, (ADS) for transuranics elimination. 543
