Course Description<br />

MUS 1240 History of Rock Music I 2FA 2 0 Examines birth, growth, and development of rock music through its<br />

acceptance as art form with significant influence on youth culture and resulting<br />

social implications.<br />

MUS 1250 Introduction to Music History and Literature 2FA 3 0 Survey of musical forms, styles, performance media (including jazz and non-<br />

Western) from Gregorian era to present.<br />

THAR 1130 Acting Fundamentals I 2FA 3 0 An introduction to the theory and practice of acting, as explored through<br />

exercises, scenes, and viewing plays. The exercises will explore the uses of<br />

imagination, concentration, relaxation, intention, and physical and vocal<br />

freedom through improvisation.<br />

THAR 1710 The Theatrical Experience 2FA 3 0 Examines the nature and function of theater by exploring the creative<br />

development and cultural significance of dramatic art. Students will also<br />

attend and analyze selected theatrical performances.<br />

THAR 1720 Elements of Performance 2FA 3 0 Examines a wide variety of modes of theatrical performance by exploring<br />

various ways text, performer, spectacle, spectator, and performance space<br />

can function across cultures.<br />

THAR 1730 Fundamentals of Play Analysis and Playwriting 2FA 3 0 Introduction to play analysis and the craft of playwriting through theory and<br />

practice.<br />

THAR 2710 Theater History I 2FA 3 0 Explores key dramatic texts, theories of theater, and performance practices in<br />

historical context, from antiquity through the 18th- century. Will highlight the<br />

influence of classical theater on contemporary culture and performance.<br />

THAR 2711 Theater History II 2FA 3 0 Explores key dramatic texts, theories of theater, and performance practices in<br />

historical context, from the 19th- century through today. Will highlight the<br />

connection between theater and the social movements and philosophies that<br />

shape the modern world.<br />

AAS 1100 Introduction to African American Literature 2HL 3 0 Focuses broadly on African American literature from work of the 18th century<br />

to contemporary writings with the intention of providing the student with an<br />

introduction to the topic. Reading poetry, short fiction, the novel, and other<br />

forms of writing, the course will explore such questions as how black writers<br />

address African American literary inheritance and production. A final paper will<br />

afford the student the occasion of applying a critical approach to literary texts.<br />

Topics may include slave and freeman and free woman narratives, the Harlem<br />

Renaissance, and the postmodern black novel. The aim of the course is to<br />

equip the student with a strong academic knowledge of African American<br />

literature in its cultural and historical contexts.<br />
