Course Description<br />
EDCS 4001 Democracy, Diversity and <strong>Education</strong> 3 3 0 Synthesizes the fields of diversity, our democratic society and education's<br />
promise for transformation and social change. Studies the social,<br />
philosophical, ideological, and historical foundations of diversity in the United<br />
States and asks how we can become transformative change agents in<br />
creating and sustaining a more diverse and educated citizenry.<br />
EDEC 4500 Principles and Practice of Curriculum in Early Childhood 3 3 0 Synthesis of early childhood curriculum content, teaching strategies, and<br />
decision-making processes in curriculum development and implementation.<br />
EDPL 4650 Professional Intership Seminar 3 3 0 Capstone seminar in which teacher candidates demonstrate data-based<br />
instructional practices and reflection as they are concurrently completing their<br />
professional internship under the direction of a cooperating teacher and<br />
university supervisor. Through planning and independent teaching an<br />
extensive unit of instruction, candidates document synthesis through the<br />
completion of a Teacher Work Sample. Allows candidates to demonstrate<br />
culminating knowledge, skills and dispositions acquired through course work<br />
in professional education as well as required content course work across the<br />
university.<br />
EE 4963 Electrical and Computer Engineering Capstone Design II 3 3 0 Continuation of team design project begun in EE 4953 with an emphasis on<br />
construction, pre-testing, and redesign; then ultimately final design assembly,<br />
testing, and analysis of outcomes. Critical design and formal design reviews<br />
conducted. Exposure to a variety of career options. Examine and develop<br />
skills necessary for a successful engineering career.<br />
EH 4710 Environmental Risks and Society Benefits 3 3 0 Reviews the historical record of the creation and use of potentially hazardous<br />
chemicals emphasizing drugs; legal or otherwise through the present day. By<br />
examination of chemical accidents or questionable drug approval decisions, in<br />
light of society needs and desires, students will appreciate chemical risks<br />
versus chemical benefits. Many infamous major chemical incidents such as<br />
Bhopal, Three Mile Island, and the Exxon Valdez spill will be covered in detail,<br />
as will current drug issues such as fluorinated drinking water supplies, Viagra,<br />
and the Plan B pill. Perspectives from the media, business, and government<br />
will be covered to enable students to critically evaluate risks and benefits, and<br />
develop a realistic understanding of the democratic chemical approval<br />
process.<br />
ENG 4600 Topics in English Studies 3 3 0 Concentrated attention to one literary topic, e.g., a genre, theme, rhetoric, or<br />
literary theory. Topics are announced quarterly in the departmental course<br />
description booklet available in Ellis Hall.<br />
