Course Description<br />
HIST 1220 Western Civilization: Modernity from 1500 2HL 3 0 What is the West? Is there indeed a coherent, identifiable Western heritage?<br />
If so, what is distinctive about the West's heritage? And what, further, is<br />
distinctive about the West's modern heritage? Addresses these questions by<br />
way of an examination of major intellectual, cultural, and political<br />
developments from 1500 until the present. Topics to be considered include<br />
the Renaissance; the religious Reformations of the 16th- century; absolutism,<br />
constitutional monarchy, and enlightened despotism; the Scientific Revolution<br />
and the Enlightenment; the American and French Revolutions;<br />
industrialization and nation building; modernism; imperialism and the World<br />
Wars; and the rise and fall of totalitarian regimes in the 20th- century.<br />
HIST 1221 The First Universities: History & Learning in Europe,<br />
1100-1600<br />
2HL 3 0 History of the first universities and their role in medieval European history.<br />
Close examination of Bologna, Paris and Oxford. Focus on three main topics:<br />
the exchange of knowledge across languages and cultures; the role of<br />
education in growing and sustaining strong government; and controversy<br />
arising from the convergence of religion, politics, and scholarship. We<br />
consider relevance of these topics to the modern university and its place in<br />
society.<br />
HUM 2070 Humanities : Great Books Ancient through Renaissance 2HL 3 0 Classics of various genres of Greek, Roman, Biblical through Medieval and<br />
Renaissance periods, leading toward understanding of Western cultural<br />
heritage. Guidance in close textual reading, historical context, critical thinking,<br />
discussion, and writing about those works.<br />
HUM 2080 Humanities: Post 17th- c. through Modern 2HL 3 0 Classics of various genres of 17th- century through Modern periods, leading<br />
toward understanding of Western cultural heritage. Guidance in close textual<br />
reading, historical context, critical thinking, discussion, and writing about those<br />
works.<br />
ILML 2901 Portuguese and Brazilian Literature in English 2HL 3 0 Literature of Portugal or literature of Brazil in English translation. No<br />
knowledge of Portuguese necessary.<br />
ILML 2902 Italian Literature in English 2HL 3 0 Famous literary works of best Italian authors, presented in English. No<br />
knowledge of Italian necessary.<br />
ILML 2903 Spanish Literature in English 2HL 3 0 Topics may deal with either Spanish or Latin American literature. No<br />
knowledge of Spanish necessary.<br />
ILML 2904 French Literature in English 2HL 3 0 Literary works by authors of French expression, read and discussed in<br />
English. No knowledge of French necessary.<br />
ILML 2905 German Literature in English 2HL 3 0 Survey of masterpieces of German literature, presented in English. No<br />
knowledge of German necessary.<br />
ILML 2906 Russian Literature in English 2HL 3 0 Selected literary works from Russia (or former Soviet Union) in English<br />
translation. Topic varies. No knowledge of Russian necessary.<br />
