Course Description<br />

T3 4720 Clothing and culture 3 3 0 Knowledge and understanding are built through the interdisciplinary study of<br />

apparel, appearance, and cross-cultural influences in variations and functions<br />

of dress. Student exploration to focus on apparel and appearance norms as a<br />

cultural universal. Emphasis on research methods, resources and activities<br />

relating to cultural/subcultural patterns.<br />

T3 4722 Food and Culture of the Mediterranean 3 3 0 Investigates the food and culture of the Mediterranean region from a cultural<br />

and geographic perspective.<br />

T3 4725 Women and Leadership: Roles and Responsibilities 3 3 0 Analysis of women in leadership roles in relation to historical, sociological,<br />

psychological, and economic perspectives. Strategies for developing<br />

leadership skills are integrated.<br />

T3 4730 Childhood in America and its Historical and<br />

Sociocultural Impact on the Society in Which We Live<br />

3 3 0 Students synthesize not only many different disciplines and media, but also<br />

past and present to synthesize an understanding of historical views of<br />

children, our views of children at the beginning of the 21st century and trends<br />

for the American idea of children in the next few decades and what will<br />

precipitate those changes.<br />

T3 4820 Art and History: 1950s and 1960s 3 3 0 An interdisciplinary examination of the years from the late 1940s to late 1960s<br />

that includes examinations of art (from Abstract Expressionism to Pop), film<br />

(from Film Noir to the influence of the counterculture), literature (from neorealism<br />

to postmodern), and intellectual life (social criticism). Students will<br />

examine key documents and learn how to interpret them by placing them in<br />

historical context. They will write a synthetic paper on a key topic covered in<br />

the class.<br />

T3 4950 Biology and Geography of Regional Food Plants 3 3 0 The proposed integrative course examines plants utilized commonly as food in<br />

a selected region of the world from a variety of perspectives including their<br />

biology and evolution, geographic origins and historical development,<br />

chemical properties related to their use, agriculture and harvesting, food<br />

products utilizing these plants, and how cultures have been modified by food<br />

plants. Students will learn how regional environmental conditions and<br />

topography, land use, political and ethnic groups, economics, and infusion of<br />

other cultures have dictated the food plants now utilized in particular areas<br />

within the region under study. Each week, food plants will be introduced and<br />

discussed both within a geographic context (e.g., Rhineland of W Germany<br />

and adjacent Belgium; and E Germany and Moravia) and a functional or<br />

product-based context (e.g., fermentation, grapes and wines; and cereal<br />

grains, salt and preservation methods).<br />

VICO 4112 Illustration Capstone: Advanced Informational Graphics 3 3 0 Capstone application of informational graphics techniques with emphasis on<br />

design and production techniques as they pertain to print and electronic<br />

formats. Cooperative buying fee.<br />
