Course Description<br />
CLWR 3320 New Testament 2HL 3 0 Surveys the writings of the New Testament in their historical, political, social,<br />
and religious context of the Jewish and Greco-Roman worlds in the first<br />
century. Discussions to gain familiarity with questions of authorship, genre,<br />
historical setting, historical accuracy, use of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament,<br />
etc. Explores modern academic approaches to the New Testament and its<br />
relation to such issues as gender, ethics, identity, the body, politics, ritual, and<br />
sacred space, among others. While the course does not adopt a faith-based<br />
perspective on the New Testament, we will note the importance of selected<br />
texts to modern religious communities.<br />
COMS 1010 Fundamentals of Human Communication 2HL 3 0 Introductory analysis of oral communication in human relationships with focus<br />
on variety of contexts including dyadic, small group, and public<br />
communication experiences. Serves as survey of human communication<br />
processes. Mass lecture.<br />
ENG 1600 Introduction to Shakespeare in Film 2HL 3 0 Through close reading of Shakespeare's plays and through viewing films in<br />
class, students will gain an understanding of Shakespeare's artistry and ideas.<br />
ENG 2010 Critical Analysis of Fiction and Non-Fiction Prose 2HL 3 0 Introduces students to the different forms of fiction and non-fiction prose<br />
(novels, short stories, essays, life-writing) as they have developed and<br />
changed over time. Students will acquire and deploy a critical vocabulary in<br />
learning to read and analyze these texts.<br />
ENG 2020 Critical Analysis of Poetry and Drama 2HL 3 0 Introduces students to the different forms of poetry and drama as they have<br />
changed over time. Students will acquire and deploy a critical vocabulary in<br />
learning to read and analyze these texts.<br />
FILM 2030 Introduction to Film: The Documentary 2HL 3 0 A historical survey of the documentary film. Weekly screenings.<br />
GK 2110 Intermediate Greek I 2HL 3 0 Study of short readings from ancient authors. Examples include the Platonic<br />
myths of creation (Protagoras) and of sexuality (Symposium).<br />
GK 2120 Intermediate Greek II 2HL 3 0 Study of intermediate-level ancient texts, typically drawn from Homer and<br />
Plato.<br />
HIST 1210 Western Civilization: Antiquity to 1500 2HL 3 0 Origins of Western heritage from antiquity to 1500. Included are such topics<br />
as religion, philosophy, literature, and visual arts, as well as major political<br />
events and developments.<br />
