Have you ever been asked for your talents in the
workplace or in school? Probably not, or at least
very rarely. This is because the workplace in the
middle sector hasn’t discovered that yet.
Let me give you an example: If a young man goes to
school, throws his backpack in the corner, and goes
to the soccer field, then he’s doing something he
wants to do, because he has a talent that lets him do
something that he finds fun. He doesn’t need to be
motivated by outside sources (for example, his
mother). In contrast to writing an essay, he doesn’t
need to agonize over his decision to play soccer
because that’s an area where he is driven. He plays
all afternoon, perhaps until late in the night and
comes home exhausted. He might have even injured
himself, he’s wet and dirty – and he feels great.
Every other activity that he has no talent for, for
example working in the garden, he has hated as a
side-effect.
With a person who has a talent for writing this
situation is switched around. For the writer the words
flow out of him like a pen over paper. He does not
need to agonize over his school essays. On the other
hand, it probably takes a lot of doing to get him to
play a game of soccer.
