The most important sentence in life is, “I love you.” The second most important is “What makes me tick?” and the third most important is, “What makes others tick?” Because of my professional occupation I traveled through many parts of the world for fifteen years and met people from many different cultures. I always asked myself the question of what makes a relationship between two people and how they can be positively shaped. One cannot achieve anything alone on a business career path. Successful teamwork is in many cases the crucible for excellent results, meaning that you meet other people with whom you want to and must achieve the best possible goal together. With people from other countries and continents you have to account for different points of view, different behaviors, and different reactions to your own behavior. In my time abroad I pushed myself toward further selfdevelopment. I took part in special training and visited several seminars so that I could better understand people, their visual signals (so I would not only have verbal communication to go on), and so I could learn more about how the different ways of human interaction work. This was not enough.
P a g e | 75 As I was taking part in my special training and reflection I helped to found the nonprofit educational charity “STEPS To Success” (www.stufenzumerfolg.de) with a team of highlymotivated people with scientific and economic backgrounds in the year 2001. The goal of the charity is to change the school system so that young people do not only acquire knowledge while attending school, but they should also learn how to apply their knowledge in business and in life so that they may become successful. Again we come to that same word. The question is: What makes people successful? This was the central question that I asked myself as I went about my professional obligations, because I have always spend my time helping people to become more successful. Whether it was my coworkers, my clients, employer, or my suppliers, for me it was always about helping people to achieve success. It is completely legitimate to profit from helping others. The question often arose in my relationship with my clients, of if it was possible to plan for success. I asked myself further, what are the factors that optimize success for someone, and is it possible to methodically generate success?
