Support/Self-Help Groups<br />

Support and self-help groups were a very popular service. At baseline (A1), 69% of<br />

participants (n=52) availed of self-help groups, this figure remained similar at A2<br />

when 76% of participants (n=19) took part in self-help groups, at A3 when 35% of<br />

respondents (n=7) used self-help groups, and increased at A4 when 100% of<br />

participants (n=13) availed of this service.<br />

Figures 83-85 show GHQ-30, BDI-II, and PDS mean scores for participants who used<br />

self-help and support groups during the 3 months prior to each assessment and for<br />

those who did not use this service. <strong>The</strong>re were statistically significant improvements<br />

with regard to general psychological health and depression between A1 and A2 for<br />

those who availed of self-help groups (paired-samples t-test) (Figure 83). Four bars at<br />

each assessment point represent data as previously in Figure 77.
