7. Conclusion<br />

T<br />

his study achieved three major aims. First, it established an overview and<br />

categorisation of the services offered to people affected by violence in<br />

Northern Ireland. Second, it explored the effectiveness of some of the most commonly<br />

used services as regards achieving their set aims/goals. Third, it encouraged<br />

collaboration through sharing and dissemination of research outcomes.<br />

1. For the first time, a detailed outline and categorisation of voluntary sector<br />

services is now available. <strong>The</strong> suggested categorisation allows for expansion<br />

and addition if and when new services become available. In the meantime,<br />

available services can now be assessed according to minimal service<br />

standards. A bottom-up approach was used to establish these basic service<br />

standards, i.e., they were drawn up from data that were provided by voluntary<br />

service organizations about the services they presently provide. With time and<br />

further information, it should be possible to raise these standards to<br />

increasingly proficient and effective levels of service delivery.<br />

2. Through the exploration of effectiveness of voluntary sector services provided<br />

by this research, it has become clear that this sector provides a much valued<br />

and important service to victims of trauma in Northern Ireland. Findings show<br />

the synergetic effectiveness of voluntary sector services and evidence that<br />

overall these services achieve their aims of helping people gain improved<br />

mental health and to cope with trauma. However, individually, some of these
