Compared to the familiarity levels of respondents, their<br />

customers seem, to a larger extent, unaware of the use<br />

and characteristics of natural refrigerants. Looking at the<br />

results per familiarity level, the highest absolute number<br />

of respondents thought that their customers’ awareness<br />

levels were at “somewhat familiar” for ammonia and<br />

hydrocarbons, and “mostly unfamiliar” for CO 2<br />

. Ammonia<br />

the best-rated refrigerant, reached an average familiarity<br />

level of 2.1 out of 4.0, indicating that even with this<br />

widely used working fluid, customers are, on average,<br />

“mostly unfamiliar”.<br />

Ammonia clearly enjoyed the highest single familiarity<br />

(“very familiar” option) among customers, a result of<br />

its continued use in North America. For hydrocarbons,<br />

which are expected to enter the North American market<br />

rapidly, awareness levels among customers tended to be<br />

in the medium range, with 22% of respondents saying<br />

that customers are “not at all familiar” with their use.<br />

ranked mostly in the “somewhat familiar” to “mostly<br />

unfamiliar” range. Also interesting was the high selection<br />

of the “do not know” option, especially for water and air<br />

refrigerants, indicating that respondents were not aware<br />

of the refrigerant knowledge of their customers.
