Although both parts of Sartre’s article are worth reading, we will focus on Part i. “The I and the me”. Questions to Consider: 1. Sartre says, in i.A, that the transcendental I is often thought to be required to explain both the unity and individuality of consciousness (the ‘classic position’). He argues, however, that consciousness ‘unifies itself’. What do you think the ‘classic position’ means by saying that the transcendental I unifies experience? And how do you think we ought to understand Sartre’s alternative account? Is it plausible? 2. In i.A Sartre says that the “transcendental I is the death of consciousness”. This is obviously figurative language. What do you think his point is? Why is it so important for Sartre that there by nothing ‘in’ consciousness? 3. In i.B Sartre makes a great deal of the difference between unreflected, reflected and reflecting consciousness. He claims that unreflected consciousness lacks an I, whilst reflective consciousness is aware of an I, but as a transcendent object (which would not survive the phenomenological reduction). Do you think that these claims are phenomenologically accurate? 4. What, then, is the difference between the Husserl’s transcendental ego and Sartre’s transcendent ego? 62
