Campaign Is So Good Even the Boss
Tosses a Bouquet at the Manager
Austin Hosteller's campaign on "Battleground"
was good enough to elicit high
praise from William P. Miller, general manager
for the Bernstein Theatres, and from
MGM exploitation men. The promotion
created widespread interest and increased
business. Hostetler is manager of the State
Theatre in Elkhart, Ind. He launched his
campaign two full weeks prior to opening
with advertisements in the daily newspapers
and weekly publications in the rural areas.
One-sheets, three-sheets and six-sheets
were posted in Elkhart and surrounding
towns. Hostetler lined up five full window
displays built around captured German
weapons and equipment. A display tieing in
the army recruiting campaign was set in the
lobby, and the entire countryside was
blanketed with 1,000 special posters imprinted.
"Don't let Elkhart become a 'Battleground.'
See 'Battleground' at the State,
etc." One thousand green-and-red signs
were placed on telephone booths.
About a dozen merchants permitted paper
bags to be stamped with a special imprint
on the dates. Two thousand heralds were
distributed in advance and an additional
2.000 on opening day. Radio spots and special
plugs on disk jockey shows stimulated
additional publicity. Five hundred window
cards were placed in strategic locations.
Special activity lined up for opening day
included a proclamation issued by the mayor
of Elkhart and published in the daily news-
paper. A parade was staged with veteran
groups, Gold Star mothers, the United States
Fifth army band, and three companies of
National guard units. Special services were
conducted in front of the theatre, with the
mayor and an army chaplain officiating.
The U.S. Fifth army band was brought to
town early in the morning by buses. It made
a tour of several band instrument plants,
and entertained with several concerts prior
to participating in the parade.
Two National guardsmen explained the
mechanics of a 75mm gun on display in front
of the theatre during the run.
Buck for 73 Cents Stunt
Covered by Toledo Blade
In a city with only one major daily newspaper,
getting that paper to go along on a
publicity stunt is quite a feat. Abe Ludacer,
manager of the Valentine Theatre, Toledo,
accomplished this in behalf of "Winchester
'73." Ludacer dispatched a young woman
dressed in cowgirl garb to dispose of silver
dollars for 73 cents on the downtown streets.
A photographer on the Toledo Blade snapped
the stunt and the paper used a six-column
photo layout depicting the reactions of people
who were offered the cash bargain.
Indian Relics of Scouts
Stimulate 'Comanche'
A colorful assortment of Indian relics and
handicraft made an effective lobby display
for Frank Costa, manager of the Warner
Theatre, Ridgewood, N. J., on "Comanche
Territory." The exhibit, featuring totem poles,
native headdress, mounted animals, war
drums, war pipes and a teepee, was obtained
from laoapaugh lodge of the Order of the
Arrow, an honorary society of Boy Scouts.
The Sunday News featured a news page of the
exhibit. The paper goes to 18,000 homes in
the area.
Ballyhoo Ups Interest
In 'Father of Bride'
For a gratis street ballyhoo on "Father of
the Bride," Howard Burkhardt, manager of
the Midland Theatre, Kansas City, made an
effective tieup with the U-Drive-It firm. The
company provided a new car equipped with
an overhead frame in which was mounted a
sign announcing the playdates, and the suggestion
that honeymooners could rent cars
from the U-Drive-It dealer. A young couple
in bridal getup occupied the vehicle as it
was driven around the streets.
Drinks Entice AA Folk
Arnold Gates, manager of the Stillman
Theatre. Cleveland, provoked amusing chuckles
from passersby through a sign placed near
the boxoffice welcoming Members of Alcoholics
Anonymous during their recent convention.
Across the bottom of the sign was the
assuring notice. "Cool. Refreshing Soft
