Red Pony, The (Rep)—Myrna Loy, Robert
Mitchiim, Louis Calhern. This is a natural
for any small town. Technicolor and Mltchum
in a horse opera are the right combinations
for country spots. In my position as
manager, projectionist, Janitor and main
booster, I didn't have much time to look at
this picture, but the remarks from my patrons
and the receipts were balm to my soul.
Played two days. Weather: Warm. — Bill
Risk, Paradise Theatre, Paradise Valley, Alta.
Small town and farm patronage.
20th CENTUHY-FOX
yChcaper by the Dozen (20th-Fox)—Clifton
Webb, Myrna Loy, Jeanne Crain. This is
an excellent family picture in Technicolor
which pleased all who came. This Is one of
the best pictures we have played in a long
time and business was very good. Get it and
play it. It will make you some money and
you will be proud to face your customers
when they come out. — E. M. Freibiirger,
Says Something or Other
Pulled in a Crowd
CALAftUXy JANE AND SAM BASS
(XJ-D—Yvonne DeCarlo, Howard Duff,
Dorothy Hart. Action and color and
Yvonne DeCarlo, or something or other,
puUed in my best midweek crowd in a
long, long time. Some were disappointed
in the tragic ending wherein Bass
(played by Howard Duff) gets killed. All
in all, though, it is fine entertainment
for the action fans, and many of the
color shots are superb—and so is the
horse racing. Played Wed., Thurs.
Weather: Nice.—I. Roche, Vernon Theatre,
Vernon, Fla. Small town and rural
patronage.
Down to the Sea In Ships (20th-Fox) —
Richard Widmark, Lionel Barrymore, Dean
Stockwell. I cannot give an accurate statement
on this one. It failed at the boxoffice
—but then everything I'm offering on midweek
is the same. I enjoyed the picture and
Lionel Barrymore and Dean Stockwell are
very good in it. I have had few sea stories
here in the past and thought the change
might boost my sagged midweek gross, but
not so. Played Wed., Thurs. Weather: Fair.
—Fred G. Weppler, Colonial Theatre, Colfax,
111. Small town and rural patronage. • • •
Great Guns (20th-Fox) — Reissue. Stan
Laurel, Oliver Hardy. Boys, grab this one.
Fox has new prints and it is worth a good
playdate. This is one of their funniest and
is also very timely—not at all dated. Fox
will sell it right and because of its length it
should be double billed, or filled out with a
two-reeler and a cartoon. Just let your patrons
Icnow the print is new and the sound is
good—it isn't like the old Hal Roach releases.
Played Fri., Sat. Weather: Cloudy.—
Pinky (20th-Fox)—Jeanne Crain, William
Lundigan, Ethel Barrymore. I played this
about two months ago but think it deserves
mention. Although the terms are rough, it
will assure you of good patronage, and above
all, the appreciation and interest of your patrons.
If the picture has played all around town and rural patronage. • • •
very good picture. Played Tues., Thurs.
leaders. He is worth advertising as such.
Business was slightly above average, which
Sand (20th-Fox) — Mark Stevens, Coleen
Gray, Rory Callioun. This is a good weekend
picture of the outdoor type, but why they
called it "Sand" we will never linow. The
scenery is breathtaking and worth the admission
price alone. Played Fri., Sat.
Weather: Warm and fair.—C. E. McMurchy,
Reston Memorial Theatre, Reston, Mon. Rural
and small town patronage.
• •
O Twelve O'clock High (20th-Fox)—Gregory
Peck, Hugh Marlowe, Gary Merrill. We
didn't do so hot with this war picture because
there was just too much conversation
and it wasn't the patrons talking. I
guess one or two of these will get by but
we've had four right close together and the
ex-soldiers don't want any of them yet.
Played Wed. through Sat. Weather: Pair and
hot.—Mayme P. Musselman, Roach Theatre,
Lincoln, Kas. Small town patronage. • • •
UNITED ARTISTS
Love Happy (UA)—Marx Bros., Ilona Massey,
Vera-Ellen. If I saw this picture one"
more night, they could bring the strait jacket
around. The corn was overripe. However,
this is the first Marx Bros, picture I have
played for some time and the patrons seemed
to enjoy it, although some remarked that they
wouldn't want to see any more of them
for a while. We did just average Sun., Mon.
business and nobody patted us on the back
and nobody kicked us, either. Weather:
Good.—Carl Neitzel, Juno Theatre, Juneau,
Wis. Small town and farm patronage. •
UNIVERSAL-INTERNATIONAL
Yes, Sir, That's My Baby (U-D—Donald
O'Connor, Gloria DeHaven, Charles Coburn.
For light, pleasant entertainment, this is
worth playing. This cast gave a very pleasing
performance. Everyone in this farming
community who came out to see this seemed
to enjoy it. I enjoyed it, too. Played two
days. Weather: Warm.—Bill Risk, Paradise
Theatre, Paradise Valley, Alta. Small town
and farm patronage. *
WARNER BROS.
Angels With Dirty Faces (WB)—Reissue.
James Cagney, Pat O'Brien, Humphrey Bogart.
This has enough action In it to please
all types of patrons, and will, too—any day
of the week except Fri., Sat. If you can get
them in, they will thank you for it. Played
Wed., Thurs. Weather: P^lr and warm.—I.
This Pleased Patrons
And the Boxofiice
MRS. MIKE (UA)—Dick Powell, Evelyn
Keyes, J. M. Kerrigan. This is one
of the most satisfactory pictures I have
played in some time. It both pleased the
patrons and at the boxoffice. Small towns
won't go wrong on this and United Artists
did not boost the price like some
companies would—more power to them!
Played Sun., Mon., Tues. Weather: Clear
and cool.—Leo W. Smith, Elk Theatre,
Elkton, S. D. Small town and rural patronage.
• •
J
is something for a Warner picture here.
Played Sun., Mon. Weather: Fine. — Ray
Engle, Strand Theatre, Lowell, Mich. Small
town and rural patronage. • •
UJohnny Belinda (WB) — Jane Wyman,
Lew Ayres, Charles Bickford. I played this
one late but everyone who saw it was very
well pleased. Lew Ayres and Jane Wyman
had good support in this picture. This one
proves that the simple stories can make the
best pictures, and the folks will come out to
see these pictures. Played two days. Weather:
Warm.—Bill Risk, Paradise Theatre, Paradise
Valley, Alta. Small town and farm patronage.
ULook for the Silver Lining (WB)—June
one of the best, the story of Marilyn Miller.
Musicals With Plots
Are Better tor Him
DAUGHTER OF ROSIE O'GRADY
(WB)—June Haver, Gordon MacRae,
James Barton. As a rule, musicals do not
draw too well here on Thurs., Fri., Sat.
This one did exceptionally well. It had
more story than the average musical and
it was more true to life—about something
which could happen every day. This is
what our customers like. Musicals should
be more like this one, leaving out things
that never really could happen, and they
should have more family Ufe and realism
in them. Played Thurs., Fri., Sat.
Weather: Hot. — Roger A. Cloet, Bay
MISCELLANEOUS
Congorilla (Alliance) —Reissue. Doubled
with "Borneo," another Martin Johnson reissue,
and we didn't do bad business the first
night. The second night there were "me an'
the mosquitoes" to watch the show. Mr. and
Mrs. Martin Johnson have some good stuff,
especially in "Congorilla." I had plenty of
walkouts on the Borneo feature, though. I
still think that these two are worth playing
anywhere. Played two nights. Weather:
Sultry.—Bill Risk, Paradise Theatre, Paradise
Valley, Alta. Small town and farm patronage.
Frontiersman, The (SG)—Reissue. This is
my first Hopalong Cassidy in several years.
I played it with a cartoon festival to above
average gross. The kid attendance was up
higher than it has been for months, but
the adult admissions were average. The
children's choir in this was exceptionally
good and there w^re many comments from
patrons that the singing alone was worth the
price of admission. Played Saturday only.
Weather: Fair.—Fred G. Weppler, Colonial
Theatre, Colfax, 111. Small town and rural
patronage. * * *
