Change in UA Shipping
Effective on Weekend
KANSAS CITY—Karl Jameson and Sam
Abend, president and secretary-treasurer of
Film Delivery and the Central Shipping and
Inspection Bureau, attended the meeting in
Chicago Sunday and Monday of National
Film Service, parent corporation. The meeting
was for the purpose of taking over the
operation of inspection and shipping services
for United Artists on Saturday (19).
According to Jameson, Central Shipping
(which is the name under which the local
branch of National Film Service operates,
each exchange office operating under a different
franchise) will open up new offices in
Oklahoma City. Des Moines and Memphis, to
handle the service for United Artists. The
opening of these offices will save exhibitors
money because of transportation points being
closer. Not all UA employes can be retained
here, however, because of new ones being
added in the new offices.
Jameson is on a trip to Denver now where
his company's new building is almost completed.
OMAHA — National Film Carrier, headed
here by M. G. Rogers, will take over distribution
of United Artists films for the Omaha
and Des Moines territories this month.
The new shipping service will continue to
be operated out of United Artists quarters
and present shipping employes will stay on.
MPAA-Aided School Film Project,
Now Four Years Old, Acclaimed
OMAHA—Motion pictures as teaching aids
in small Nebraska high schools are no longer
an experiment. They have become almost
unanimously excepted as a result of the work
of Roger Albright and Dr. Wesley C. Meierhenry
through the Nebraska Film Program,
started in 1946. Meierhenry, former assistant
director of the University of Nebraska
extension division, has been director. Albright,
director of educational services for
the Motion Picture Ass'n of America, has
been its adviser and expediter. He headquarters
in Washington.
The program has been worked through the
four state colleges, the University of Nebraska
and the University of Omaha. It
calls for intensive use of motion pictures
each year in about 30 small high schools
scattered over the state. Fifteen schools
participated for the full four years.
Meierhenry reported these success indicators:
1. All of the teachers colleges say they
intend to keep and expand their film libraries
and circulate them to secondary schools.
2. When the program began, only the University
of Nebraska had any teacher training
audio-visual methods. Now "every campus
is doing something with audio-visual" and
the teachers college at Peru requires such
training of its education graduates.
Cinderella Contest Held
At Holton, Kas., Arcade
HOLTON. KAS. — The presentation of
Cinderella of Jackson County from the stage
of the Arcada Theatre was the highlight of
the house's recently completed Employes
week. Don Tillotson. manager of the Arcada.
emceed the show and gave Cinderella, Alice
Dell her gifts, including a new dress, a pearl
necklace, shoes, hose and phonograph records
and a year's pass to the Arcada.
Another popular event of the week was a
coloring contest for grade school kids. There
were many entries and interest was keen
among the small-fry. Prizes awarded were
theatre passes.
Ticket Taxes Up a Bit
MINNEAPOLIS—The amusement business
in Minnesota was slightly better last month
than for the corresponding period a year
ago, according to federal tax returns. Admission
taxes, mostly from movie theatres,
amounted to $689,000 for the month past. In
July 1949 they were $678,000.
New Car Given Away
MARYSVILLE. KAS.—Darrell Ray. manager
of the Liberty Theatre here, presented
a new Chevrolet sedan to Rufus Hazlett.
Onaga. winner in the merchants' contest
sponsored here during two months. Eddie
Henderson, Isis manager, congratulated the
winner.
Leslie Goodwins and John Greene will
write a two-reel comedy, "Tin Horn Troubadours,"
for RKO.
opinion that the films have broadened the
students' understanding of specific subjects
and general culture."
Albright said teachers claimed that wellprepared
films helped them over the rough
spots in their Own training, particularly
where laboratory or reference material was
inadequate.
"When you use Irving Langmuir for a
physics teacher, you're bound to impress a
student more."
Films on general subjects—citizenship, democracy,
music and art appreciation—present
arguments and evidence convincingly
and impressively. These are selected by reviewing
boards of teachers.
In very small schools, where teachers must
handle several different subjects each day,
the films give the student a chance to learn
more effectively.
The project was financed by grants from
the Carnegie Corp.. New York City, several
producers of educational films, and the Nebraska
colleges. The Carnegie group provided
$54,300. The producers and the schools each
about $50.000—much of it in services and
special rates. Meierhenry said.
"It was the biggest project of its kind
ever attempted," he said.
Nebraska was picked by the MPA and
Carnegie group because of its high proportion
of small high schools, Albright said.
