Old Hiway Auto Park
Now Is Pike Drive-In
PROVIDENCE—George Card, long identified
with the amusement park business,
has been named manager of the new Pike
Drive-In located on the Hartford Pike at
Johnston, three miles west of this city. Operated
by Albert M. Schuman and Louis D.
Rogow of Hartford, the new drive-in is on
the site formerly occupied by the old Hiway
Auto Theatre.
Very little remains of the old open-airer,
Schuman and Rogow practically revamped
the place from top to bottom. A new screen
has been erected and Century projectors
were installed by the Massachussetts Theatre
Equipment Co. of Boston, along with incar
speakers.
Parking facilities for close to 600 cars
will be increased as soon as all remodeling
and building is completed. As patrons drive
in under a new overhead sign, which cost
approximately $3,000, they are greeted by
side walls beautifully decorated with scenic
paintings. The surrounding grounds have
been newly landscaped. Among other innovations
is a cafeteria-style snack bar.
The theatre has already been opened to
the public, but workmen and painters are
continuing the improvement program.
NEWHAMPSHIRE
n Ithough firemen were called from the station
directly across the street, W. H. Sullivan,
owner of the Enfield Theatre in Enfield,
single-handed conquered a flash blaze
which started in the projection booth. Some
of his hair was singed while he battled the
flames. A previous theatre on the same site
was gutted by fire eight years ago.
The Peterborough Players are recalling
with pride that James Whitmore, currently
starring in the MGM film, "The Next Voice
You Hear . . .
." began his professional career
at that summer theatre three years
ago.
James and Lillian Cardi
Win Permit for Theatre
CRANSTON, R. I.—After two previous applications
had been turned down. James V.
and Lillian R. Cardi recently won their fight
to erect a theatre in the Knightsville section
of this city. The zoning board of review
granted permission at a special hearing
after the applicants had made several
adjustments in the original plans.
In granting the permit, the zoning board
directed that the parking lot to be set up by
the Cardis be used by theatre patrons and
employes only. Should the Cardis build
stores, employes of these establishments also
would be permitted to use the 165-car lot.
The new house, seating approximately 800
patrons, will be located on Park avenue near
Cranston street.
Due to a local ordinance, all theatre applicants
must come before the zoning board
of review before construction can start.
Granting of the Cardis' application brings
to a successful conclusion a long, drawn-out
battle between the prospective theatre operators
and neighboring remonstrants.
