More Stars Join Benefit For Cerebral Palsy Ass'n HOLLYWOOD — Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis have been added to the star-studded benefit show for the United Cerebral Palsy Ass'n to be presented in the Hollywood Bowl Friday i25i. Bob Hope is organizing the affair. Other stars newly announced for the performance are Peggy Lee. Marilyn Maxwell, Mel Torme, Eddie Bracken, the dance team of Marge and Gower Champion and golfer Ben Hogan. Previously announced were Betty Hutton. Jane Russell, Danny Thomas, Dan Dailey, Dinah Shore, Jimmy Wakely and Gene Tierney. Hope is chairman of the United Cerebral Palsy Ass'n campaign and will emcee the Bowl show. * « * Paramount has completed production on the 1950 Christmas seal trailer, which features Ray Milland narrating the annual appeal. The film, which was made by the studio trailer department for the National Tuberculosis A.ss'n. will be attached to newsreels and will be shown in thousands of theatres during December as a public service. Orbit Office in Seattle SEATTLE — Orbit Films, film producing unit of Dimensions. Inc.. has established a location office here, according to Robert Gardner, president, to provide locations for production of features, shorts and documentaries. l|U||OLLYWOOD picture-makers should Irjl find food for thought in an experiment just completed by Fox West Coast Theatres, one of the nation's largest and most enterprising circuits. Some two months ago. as a means of stimulating waning attendance, the chain inaugurated a test in 25 of its showca.ses in the greater Los Angeles area by reducing admission scales to substantial degree. In some instances the slash was as high as 50 per cent, from 50 cents down to a quarter, while in others the decrease was to 44 cents from the previous 65. Theatres in which the experiment was conducted ranged throughout the city and as far away as Long Beach and Van Nuys, two outlying communities. At the time the test was announced. FWC toppers disclosed that the showcases were selected on the basis of economic conditions in those sectors in which they are located. Now comes the surprising word from the circuit that the experiment, except in one lone situation, proved a complete failure. The price rollback did not increase, but actually lessened, attendance: and. correspondingly, resulted in lower overall revenues. Moderate success was reported in only one instance, a neighborhood house in the southwestern portion of the city, where circuit executives reported business was upped by an approximate 15 per cent. The price cuts are therefore being maintained in that theatre and two others, but in the remaining 22 the scale has reverted upward to the old level. Top brass in the production and distribution branches of the industry—as well as the trade's sideline experts—have posed many reasons as being contributory to the public's waning interest in motion pictures. They include, among others, television, the overabundance of reissues and too-high admission prices. FWC's experience seems materially to discount that last named theory. If a 50 per cent slash in theatre tariffs fails to stimulate attendance, inescapable is the thought that something had better be done to improve the merchandise and the methods through which it is exploited and publicized. In his future cross-country travels, John Wayne will do well to avoid Texas. Every citizen of the Lone Star state will be sunning for him since Wayne disclosed he is going to produce and star for Republic in "The Alamo." But Wayne isn't going to make it in Texas. He will lens it in, of all places, Mexico. Shades of the Titanic and the Lusitania: From Praise Pundit Perry Lieber comes word that Producer Samuel Goldwyn's cur- rent contribution to RKO Radio's product lineup was selected as the feature to be screened during the maiden voyage of a new- French liner, the SS Liberte. The picture: "Edge of Doom." Invitations to the press preview of Thor Productions' "The Fireball." starring Mickey Kooney and Pat O'Brien, bore the supplementary information that the film is "to be released by 20th Century-Fox in conjunction with the celebration of Mickey Rooney's 25th anniversary in show business." Who's celebrating^-other than Rooney? On the sick list went one Ethel Sackin, a member of the Warner studio publicity staff, when she reportedly broke a shoulder and tore muscles and ligaments while trying to kill a moth in her apartment. That's what comes of taking home those moth-eaten releases from Alex Evelove's Burbankian blurbery. Columbia and Paramount studios were named defendants in a lawsuit in which one Billy West, described as a retired screen actor, is undertaking to recover damages in the amount of S30.000. charging invasion of privacy. He contends in the action that a clip from Columbia's "Broadway Bill." in which he appeared in 1934, was used in the recent Paramount remake, "Riding High," without his permission and without reimbursement. As a part of his complaint. Plaintiff West reveals that he retired from motion pictures in 1935 and since that time has attempted to forget all about films — and has kept his former connection with it from his new circle of friends. There is no indication concerning Billy's present trade or profession—but apparently he's found a respectable job—and friends. A harpist named Robert Maxwell has been signed by 20th-Fox to teach Clifton Webb how to finger the instrument for scenes in "For Heaven's Sake." Had the studio been economy-minded, it could have called upon Publicity Chief Harry (The Palm) Brand for such tutoring. No one is more adept at pulling strings. From Norman Siegel's Paramount praisery. advice that Gloria Swan.son officiated at recent ceremonies marking the completion of the task of installing 900 new street signs in Beverly Hills. The event, adds the Siegel release, "took place at Sunset Boulevard and Crescent Drive . . . By coincidence she returns to the screen in the Paramount film, 'Sunset Boulevard'."
