Professional Designation Programs
FLMI and ALMI Designations
The Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI) Program is a
10-course professional development program that provides
a comprehensive business education in the context of the
insurance and financial services industry. Established in
1932, the FLMI Program is the world’s largest universitylevel
education program in insurance and financial services.
The five-course ALMI Program (Level I courses + three
ALMI-level courses) will focus on the core operations that
make working in our industry so unique, as well as on a more
in-depth representation of financial concepts relevant to our
industry.
Changes to ALMI and FLMI Requirements
Exciting course changes planned for the FLMI Program will
enhance the program’s relevance and reflect the changing
products, operations, and economic environment of the
industry. The revised program establishes a meaningful and
focused curriculum at each of the three levels of the FLMI
Program:
Certificate/Level I: Provides need-to-know information
about insurance products and operations so employees
quickly gain confidence, serve the customer effectively,
and contribute to company success
ALMI: Strengthens employees’ financial acumen;
examines the core operational areas and marketing/sales
functions that make the insurance business unique
FLMI: Teaches insurance-specific business management
topics to build strategic perspective
With these changes in the FLMI curriculum come new
requirements for earning the ALMI. The new ALMI
requirements specify the three ALMI-level courses needed to
earn to receive the ALMI designation.
Transition Plan for Candidates
Pursuing the ALMI
The ALMI transition plan will help learners know which
track to use to earn the ALMI, and which course(s) to take
next. Until the end of 2011, learners can use either the
ALMI Transition track or the ALMI Permanent track to earn
an ALMI.
The ALMI Transition track will help learners who will have
satisfied some, but not all, of the requirements for an ALMI
as of June 30, 2010. “Grandfathering” will allow learners
using this track to retain ALMI credit for completion of
courses that are not part of the ALMI Permanent track.
Anyone using the Transition track must complete all
requirements for an ALMI by December 31, 2011, at which
time they risk losing these grandfathered ALMI credits.
However, these credits will still apply to the FLMI
designation.
Under the ALMI Transition track, LOMA 307—
Business and Financial Concepts for Insurance
Professionals can be used to fulfill the requirement
of LOMA 356—Investments. If possible, learners should
enroll for the new LOMA 307 course at the ALMI level, and
then enroll for the LOMA 356 course at the FLMI level. (See
course descriptions for LOMA 307
and LOMA 356 on pages 21 and 23.)
The ALMI Permanent track will include the five courses
on page 9.
Note: Most learners will benefit from taking LOMA 307,
a course on financial concepts, before LOMA 356, a
more in-depth financial course. Learners who do not
have credit for or have not begun work on LOMA 356
should take LOMA 307 to satisfy the 307/356
requirement under the ALMI Transition track.
