Connecting the GR-55 to MIDI Devices
What is MIDI?
MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a standard
specification that allows musical data to be transferred
between electronic musical instruments and computers. If
a MIDI cable is connected between devices equipped with
MIDI connectors, you’ll be able to play multiple devices from a
single MIDI keyboard, perform ensembles using multiple MIDI
instruments, program the settings to change automatically as
the song progresses, and more.
About the MIDI Connectors
MIDI IN connector
This connector receives MIDI data sent from an external MIDI device.
The GR-55 can switch patches in response to the incoming MIDI data.
* It’s not possible to play the GR-55’s sound generator via input from
the MIDI IN connector or the USB-MIDI connector.
MIDI OUT connector
This connector transmits MIDI data to an external MIDI device. You
can use this to control an external MIDI device.
The GR-55 has the following two types of MIDI connectors, which
operate in different ways.

You can make MIDI settings that apply to the entire GR-55, such as
specifying the MIDI channel. For the procedure, refer to “Settings for
the Entire GR-55 (SYSTEM)” (p. 69). For details on each setting, refer to
“MIDI/USB” (p. 79).
