F<strong>in</strong>ally, no differences <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternal complexity between class 1 <strong>and</strong> class 2 verbal predicates<br />
by look<strong>in</strong>g at scopal ambiguities with adverbials like ‘almost’ <strong>and</strong> ‘aga<strong>in</strong>’ (von Stechow 1995,<br />
Rapp & von Stechow 1999) as well as under negation. (Due to space limitations we are not able<br />
to cite correspond<strong>in</strong>g examples here; see Tatevosov <strong>and</strong> Kirpo 2012.)<br />
One can conclude that two types of transitives, contrary to the <strong>in</strong>itial assumption, are<br />
structurally identical <strong>and</strong> semantically alike. Moreover, everyth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> (22)–(27) (morphosyntax,<br />
scope of temporal adverbials, scope of negation) suggests that both types are derived result<br />
verbs like ‘break’ <strong>and</strong> project as much as a vP. Given that, the very fact that class 2 transitives<br />
consist of four pieces of morphology (root – LA – N – TYR) starts be<strong>in</strong>g problematic: <strong>in</strong> an SPD<br />
system, the vP does not conta<strong>in</strong> enough projections to host all the four.<br />
In what follows, we propose an RPD analysis based on the assumption that class 1 <strong>and</strong><br />
class 2 transitives are structurally identical, <strong>and</strong> the difference only emerges when the structure<br />
is spelled out. We believe that this analysis, which crucially relies on AktP <strong>in</strong> between vP <strong>and</strong><br />
VP, as <strong>in</strong> (3), captures more facts with less stipulations than the alternative outl<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> (19)–<br />
(21). But to make the analysis work, we need to figure out what exactly the structure be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
spelled out looks like <strong>and</strong> what determ<strong>in</strong>es the choice between the two spell-out options.<br />
3.2. The two relations<br />
A solution to the puzzle beg<strong>in</strong>s to emerge if we take <strong>in</strong>to account a lexical semantic<br />
peculiarity that verbs from class 2 share. They all <strong>in</strong>volve what Rothste<strong>in</strong> (2004) calls an<br />
<strong>in</strong>cremental relation between activity <strong>and</strong> change-of-state subevents.<br />
For Rothste<strong>in</strong>, events e <strong>and</strong> e′ are <strong>in</strong>crementally related, (28), iff there is a contextually<br />
salient function that maps every member of the <strong>in</strong>cremental cha<strong>in</strong> of e′, (29), to a<br />
cotemporaneous part of e. For <strong>in</strong>stance, for predicates like read a novel the relation between<br />
activity <strong>and</strong> change of state is <strong>in</strong>cremental, s<strong>in</strong>ce for any (contextually relevant) part of the<br />
read<strong>in</strong>g activity there must be a correspond<strong>in</strong>g part of the process of the novel gett<strong>in</strong>g read <strong>and</strong><br />
vice versa.<br />
