It is strange to see the water running boath ways from the Punch Bowl @It is strange that I have not taken a mele in day light sence I left boat incampment we have to travl boah late and arley for feere of being set fast by the snow as it sumtimes falls to the depth of25 feet, we went ove = r a strang loking cuntrey to day it loks as if sum dre =dful huracain had nocked all the treese down throughing them in every direction thro =ugh the fallen timber thare is a younger grough that it makes it all moast imposa = ble to get throught it camped at the Grand Traver = s whare thare is 3 men to asist us a cross with a boat we expect to cross on the horses i!!! Crossed the Grand Travrs in a hevey snow stonn this morning and found the wter just pasable for the horses pased Ie Rocks prarie and camped at the same plase I had cam~d at a year a =go the 5th.. of November, 1846. 6th. this morning the wind is blowing intensley coald had to pass along the shore of a lake the wind blowing the drift snow in our fases pasing the fulllinth of lake (6 or 8 m.) we had to all walk to ceape our = selfs warm my beard got so matted together with ise that I could not open my mouth and with difacel = ta breath through my no =se stoped at the lodge of one of my men and got th =aughed out arived atjas =pers House 4 P.M. jaspers sitteuwated at the east side of the Mountains though it is soarended by them and is sub = ject to high winds it is cep =t as a hors poast thare are but few Indians here what are here are Shew-shops the mou = ntain shepe ware verry nu = meress while I was here I ha = ve seene from the house no less then 5 bands of them at a time they men of the plase ware bringing them inn every day I made a sketch of a rams hed intended for the Govemer. I wated here for they men to make a sled and snow sews they had to gow a days march for the wuoad to mak them otT (burch) and the river to freese harder. Mr Frasher lent me a dod sled and with 3 of the companeys we started on the. ~ofNovember. went but about 12 m. and cam = ped at a hunters lodgs the fam = aley of himself wife an oald woman and 5 children the hunters wife made a good bed of mountain cheap skins which was the best I have had for menney months the hun = ter returned late in the evening The American Art Journal/Volume XXI • Number 2 51
