I hav not slept so comfortabl for a long time as I did last night pased through jaspers Lake (12 m) the wind blew a perfect gale fortunut =eley in our faver with a per =fect cloud of drift snow it sent the sled along witho = ut the asistans of the dogs on leveing the lake we had to put on our snowshews caI\lped below the Lake 3 m. 17U( started in good spiretes which ware sune to be dam =ped we found the ise verry bad one of the men had to push the sled along with a stick to help they dogs in the after none haveing got on to a bad pese of ise I went through the strenth of the cUl·ant caning me nerley under the ise whare I must have drowned I got my men to camp fore my cloas ware frosen stiff on the instant ~ missfortians never com single we found this morning that the dog that Mr. Fraser lent me had deserted and gon back though we had tied them everry night he had nawed the coard in too in the night this may co = as me to leve my trunk behind pased the Grand raped at the bottum of which was emence mass =es of ise called Burdenaws in sum parts of the river this formed sutch barlors that it seemed at first imposable to pass we ware oblged to carry long stick and feele every step we tuck never putting our foot down without firs feeleing whether it was solid or not, one of the men went out of sight through one of these unconsoladted masses of ise we have had a hard way of it my feete verry sore 19th. this morning had to go through the woods to av =oud the water that overfto =ad the ise the bruch and fall =en timber was so thick tha = t we had to cut a road for they dogs and was about a half a day gowing a half a mile we again got on to the burdanaws this day has beep one of perfect misria 20lb. last night was so coald that I could not slepe and this morning I had mal de ra = cket so bad that at times I thought I should faint mall de rackett is common among those that are not acustumed to walking on snow shews you get it in The American Art Journal/Volume XXI • Number 2 53
