were used here and this chapter focuses primarily on the use of Community
Workshop, Field Survey, Participatory Forest Inv<strong>en</strong>tory, Semi-structured Interview,
and Matrix and Ranking in the community FLR.
10. 1. 1 Community workshop
Community workshops were held in Dagan FLR demonstration area in May
2008, March 2009 and May 2009 respectively. The main purpose of the first
community workshop was to make the villagers understand FLR initiative, <strong>en</strong>courage
their active participation and to id<strong>en</strong>tify the key difficulties and the solution
that villagers think in the curr<strong>en</strong>t community developm<strong>en</strong>t. The first
community workshop was held on May 14, 2008 with the helpfrom Qunying
Town leaders and there were totally 171 participants (at least one person per
family) , including 68 wom<strong>en</strong>. The following items were pres<strong>en</strong>ted to villagers:
(1) introduction to purpose, background and cont<strong>en</strong>t of FLR initiative at
community level; (2) introduction of the FLR work group; (3) description of
the purpose, task and activity arrangem<strong>en</strong>t of FLR work group; (4) How to
collaborate and participate for villagers; (5) help villagers to elect village repres<strong>en</strong>tatives
to implem<strong>en</strong>t FLR initiative. The second village workshop were
held in March 24, 2009 after field survey and participatory forest inv<strong>en</strong>tory
(Subcompartm<strong>en</strong>t division and subcompartm<strong>en</strong>t cruise), aiming at verifying
the boundaries and ownership (householder) of subcompartm<strong>en</strong>ts and getting
feedback of FLR draft planning from villagers to correct the plan timely. As
the priority sites need to be id<strong>en</strong>tified in this meeting, most sites are collectively
owned degraded primary forest and secondary forest, there were totally
421 participants, including 156 wom<strong>en</strong>, meeting the request of 2/3 of the villagers
to participate in the meeting. The village workshop were held in 3 villages
respectively because of the large number of participants. Problems, causes
and solutions in Dagan FLR demonstration area, ranking of favorite tree species,
verifying maps of landscape mosaic, and id<strong>en</strong>tifying the ownership of
priority sites were pres<strong>en</strong>ted in the meeting. The third village workshop was
held in May 26, 2009 before implem<strong>en</strong>t site level restoration measures and
aimed at getting the feedback of site level restoration interv<strong>en</strong>tions, passing
community FLR Plan by vote and signing contracts related to implem<strong>en</strong>ting
restoration measures. There were 154 villagers participated in the meeting, at
least one person per family, including 53 wom<strong>en</strong>.
