Part 2: <strong>Path</strong> <strong>dependence</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>novation</strong> across 12 <strong>British</strong><br />

cities<br />

2.1 The bases of path <strong>dependence</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

new path creation<br />

Our basic argument is that the sectoral<br />

pathways that develop over time with<strong>in</strong> <strong>city</strong>regional<br />

economies collectively determ<strong>in</strong>e the<br />

relative capacities of those spatial economies<br />

to absorb new knowledge from their external<br />

environments because they determ<strong>in</strong>e to a<br />

large extent:<br />

• the occupations that emerge <strong>in</strong> different<br />

sectors;<br />

• the types of knowledge assets <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>frastructures that emerge as a result of<br />

both private <strong>and</strong> collective <strong>in</strong>vestments <strong>in</strong><br />

access<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> exploit<strong>in</strong>g new knowledge;<br />

<strong>and</strong><br />

• the <strong>in</strong>dividual <strong>and</strong> collective capacities to<br />

<strong>in</strong>teract with external sources of knowledge<br />

<strong>and</strong> to exploit them <strong>in</strong> comb<strong>in</strong>ation with local<br />

knowledge assets.<br />

These <strong>in</strong>teractive relationships are illustrated <strong>in</strong><br />
