5 FINAL RECOMMENDATIONS EXECUTIVE SUMMARY SUNY Cobleskill Facilities Master Plan – Phase 5 Report November 2011 Mission and Vision History Distinguished Academic Programs and Accreditation It is the mission of SUNY Cobleskill to provide students with a high-quality educational experience supported by technology for an affordable price. Above all, the College strives to maintain a student-centered learning environment that fosters “friendship, cooperation, and respect.” The vision of SUNY Cobleskill as an institution can be simply summarized as “real life: real learning,” and refers to the College’s continued tradition of experiential learning. Opportunities for hands-on learning are woven into the College’s curriculum in all three Schools. A wide variety of field experiences are available through the School of Agriculture, from raising fish at the coldwater fish hatchery to training horses at the campus’s state-of-theart equestrian center. Students enrolled in the College’s Histotechnology program, offered through the School of Liberal Arts & Sciences, complete a 400-hour clinical rotation at an affiliate hospital as part of their studies. Culinary Arts students in the School of Business have the opportunity to apply their skills in “kitchen” laboratories and work at the student-run American Heritage Restaurant. These and other hands-on experiences offered by the College encourage the practical application of knowledge, giving students the advantage of real-life experience prior to graduation. SUNY Cobleskill is one of eight Colleges of Technology in the SUNY system. Set in rural surroundings on approximately 800 acres, the College is only a 40-minute drive from Albany, conveniently located in the “middle of everywhere.” The College has a rich history and is among the oldest agricultural schools of its kind in New York State, dating back to 1911 when a charter for the school was approved by the New York State Legislature as part of a nation-wide government initiative to support agricultural education. Since the school first opened its doors to students in 1916, it has operated under several different names. When the State University of New York [SUNY] System was formed in 1948, the College was one of the first institutions to be included. Like many colleges and universities in New York and the United States, the College experienced major growth in the 1960s and 1970s, the period in which most of the existing campus facilities were constructed. In 1987, the College offered its first Baccalaureate degree, the Bachelor of Technology in Agricultural Science, and in the same year was renamed the State University of New York College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill. Now approaching its Centennial, SUNY Cobleskill has continued to evolve both physically and academically. Today the College has a diverse student body and offers a variety of extracurricular activities, with more than 50 student clubs, a number of campus-wide events, and intramural athletics. The College also competes at the NCAA Division III level of intercollegiate sports as part of the North Eastern Athletic Conference. At a national level, SUNY Cobleskill is distinguished for its programs in Agriculture, Natural Resources, Fisheries and Wildlife, Dairy Production, and Equine Studies. It has received regional and state-wide recognition for its programs in Financial Services, Culinary Arts, Information Technology and Technology Management, and Early Childhood. SUNY Cobleskill is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Specialized accredited academic programs include: • • • • Culinary Arts, accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the American Culinary Federation Early Childhood, accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children Histotechnology, accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Lab Sciences Agricultural Equipment Technology, accredited by the Associated Equipment Distributors Foundation In addition to these accreditations, the College is a member of the National Chef’s Collaborative, the New York State Restaurant Association, the Baker’s Guild, and the New York State Hospitality and Tourism Association. In terms of academics, the College currently features 19 Baccalaureate degree programs and 31 Associate degree programs in a wide range of disciplines. In addition, a certificate program is offered for Meat Processing & Food Safety, which takes advantage of the College’s onsite USDA approved meat processing facility. The College was recently recognized as one of the Best Regional Colleges in the North by U.S. News & World Report. While the College has undergone many transformations since it was established in the beginning of the 20th century, it maintains its commitment to offering high-quality education with a focus on “real learning” for “real life.” 6
5 SUNY Cobleskill Facilities Master Plan – Phase 5 Report FINAL RECOMMENDATIONS November 2011 Enrollment SUNY Cobleskill Institutional Research [IR] is projecting 7% FTE enrollment growth through the next planning period, with 2,686 FTE students in 2023. At a departmental level, the greatest enrollment increase (38%) is expected for the School of Agriculture & Natural Resources. This is partly attributed to the addition of the new Alternative Energy program, but significant growth is also projected for Agricultural Business (51%) and Animal Science (41%). Enrollment for the School of Business is projected to increase 5% from 2009 to 2023, driven by growth in Business & Accounting (24%) and Culinary Arts (14%). Computer Technology, however, is expected to decrease in enrollment by 42%. The School of Liberal Arts & Sciences expects a marginal decline, driven by a projected decrease in enrollment for Mathematics (41%) and Natural Sciences (24%). Increased enrollment is projected for Early Childhood (20%), Health and Physical Education (20%) and Social Sciences (12%), while Humanities/Communication/Graphic Design remains steady.
