Philosophy is one of the fundamental disciplines in academia. It is that discipline which studies the most basic issues, and which also ties together the other disciplines. It sharpens critical thinking skills and gives students an understanding of the ideas that move society. The American Philosophical Association guidelines for philosophy majors emphasizes that there are four different models for the teaching of philosophy: the historical model, the field model, the problems model, and the activity model; all of which are utilized in the Concordia philosophy minor. They offer students the opportunity to examine many of the religious and philosophical ideas that have motivated great movements and controversies which shape the spiritual and intellectual framework of the modern world.
