Gratiot
This community is a good place to stop for refueling –
both for you and your vehicle – refreshment and relaxation.
The village sits on the Cheese Country Recreational Trail
and offers rental of ATVs to take a closeup look at the flora
and fauna along what was once a rail corridor. The trail is
for hikers, bicyclists, ATV riders, horseback riders, and, in
winter, cross country skiers and snowmobilers. In winter
the trail is a hub for snowmobile trails extending into
Illinois.
The Village campground is great for ATV users having
sites with electricity and without ($15 and $10 per night).
The campground is within walking distance of village pubs
and restaurants, and it sits next to the Cheese Country
Trail. A bathroom and shower facility will be opening in
2009.
The fire department hosts fish boils twice a year and
also offers up an annual chicken barbecue that provides
fun for people of all ages. The community also puts on an
annual Labor Day celebration with a flourish, signaling
an end to summer and the start of school. The annual
community fundraiser in October attracts people from
around the area with its variety of musical performances.
Gratiot is at the junction of the Pecatonica and Wolf
rivers. Its train depot was one of the largest in the area,
serving the bustling community that had three hotels and
a thriving commercial district. Volunteers are restoring the
depot. Other historic buildings have found many new uses,
including a restaurant-hotel, pub and grill, and specialty
stores.
Argyle
The eastern branch of the Pecatonica River runs through
Argyle, providing a place to fish, boat and picnic. Argyle
Community Legion Park has tennis courts, a jungle gym, shelter
house and even a refurbished Cold War-era fighter jet. An
inspiring Veteran’s Memorial was dedicated in 2008. A new golf
course, nestled along the Pecatonica and Yellowstone rivers, is
just a few miles northwest of Argyle.
One of Argyle’s early civic leaders was John Saxton,
stepfather of Robert M. LaFollette, better known as “Fighting
Bob.” LaFollette was elected Wisconsin’s governor in 1900, and
was a United States senator from 1904 until he died in 1925.
