Monroe
Monroe is home to the Green
County Courthouse, a splendid example
of the Romanesque style of architecture
and one of the most photographed
structures in southern Wisconsin. Built
in 1891, the courthouse is surrounded
by a downtown shopping district
reminiscent of an old world European
town square and offers apparel, gifts,
art, antiques, chocolates, bakery,
restaurants, and cheese for sale.
The area is officially designated as a
National Register Historic District.
Visitors to Monroe are invited to
discover the old world art of making
cheese at the Historic Cheesemaking
Center. Graced with two huge
copper cheesemaking kettles on the
front lawn, this shrine to local cheese
and dairy industries is located in a
beautifully restored depot. Another
treasure is the
Green County Historical Society
Museum, located in an 1861 church.
The Little Red Schoolhouse next door
is also open for exploration. Guests
interested in Swiss heritage will enjoy
Turner Hall, featuring a Ratskeller (beer
