8-10 feet. The Avoca Prairie is located about 2 miles east <strong>of</strong> the<br />

village and is one <strong>of</strong> four Department <strong>of</strong> Natural Resources public<br />

hunting areas within 7 miles <strong>of</strong> the village. Game common to the area<br />

are the whiletail deer, wild turkey, waterfowl, pheasants, and other<br />

small game. The prairie is the largest contiguous prairie east <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>Miss</strong>issippi River. The bottomlands are covered with many different<br />

grasses, flowers, and other plants.<br />

Barneveld, the site <strong>of</strong> a devastating tornado, which struck Iowa<br />

and Dane counties on June 8, 1984, is known for its resiliency.<br />

Barneveld took the brunt <strong>of</strong> this storm, which killed 9 people, injured<br />

200, and did $40 million worth <strong>of</strong> physical damage, leaving much <strong>of</strong><br />

the village destroyed. Today a new, modern and thriving community<br />

has grown out <strong>of</strong> the rubble. Just west <strong>of</strong> town is the new Deer Valley<br />

Golf Course, a par 72 championship facility and a water park for kids<br />

<strong>of</strong> all ages. South <strong>of</strong> Barneveld on Highway K, is Botham Vineyards and<br />

Winery, a 15-acre vineyard rich<br />

Blue Mound State Park, located<br />
