CHAPTER 2 - TROPICAL CYCLONES IN <strong>200</strong>7<br />

<strong>200</strong>7<br />

HAIYAN (0716) developed as a tropical depression over<br />

the sea west of the Midway Islands on 30 September.<br />

After turning in a counterclockwise circle, it was<br />

upgraded into a tropical storm on 5 October. Turning to<br />

the north, Haiyan weakened into a tropical depression<br />

and dissipated over the same sea on 7 October.<br />

PODUL (0717) formed as a tropical depression over the<br />

western North Pacific around the Mariana Islands on<br />

3 October and moved generally to the northeast, and<br />

then was upgraded into a tropical storm on 5 October.<br />

Moving northeastward, Podul further intensified into a<br />

severe tropical storm the next day. As Podul continued<br />

to move northeastward, it transformed into an extratropical<br />

cyclone over the sea far east of Japan on 7<br />

October and then dissipated on 9 October.<br />

LINGLING (0718) formed as a tropical depression over<br />

the sea east of Wake Island on 10 October <strong>200</strong>7 and<br />

moved generally northwestwards. It intensified into<br />

a tropical storm the next day. Turning to move from<br />

northwestwards to northeastward over the sea east of<br />

Japan over the sea east of Japan, Lingling transformed<br />

into an extra-tropical cyclone over the sea south of the<br />

Aleutian Islands on 15 October.<br />

KAJIKI (0719) formed as a tropical depression over the<br />

western North Pacific around the northern part of the<br />

Mariana Islands on 18 October and moved generally<br />

northwestward. It intensified into a tropical storm and<br />

then a severe tropical storm the next day. Kajiki rapidly<br />

developed into a typhoon on 20 October and turned to<br />

move northwards. It moved over the sea east of Japan<br />

and gradually turned to move eastwards on 21 October<br />

and weakened into a severe tropical storm. Later, Kajiki<br />

became an extra-tropical cyclone far east of Japan on<br />

22 October.<br />

FAXAI (0720) formed as a tropical depression over the<br />

sea east of the Philippines on 25 October and moved<br />

northwestwards. It intensified into tropical storm and<br />

turned to move northwards. Turning to the northeast<br />

and accelerating, Faxai further intensified into a severe<br />

tropical storm on the same day. Keeping its northeastward<br />

track, Faxai passed around the Izu Islands and then<br />

became an extra-tropical cyclone over the sea east of<br />

Japan on 27 October.<br />

PEIPAH (0721) formed as a tropical depression over the<br />

sea east of Philippines on 1 November <strong>200</strong>7 and moved<br />

westwards. It intensified into a tropical storm on 3<br />

November. Keeping its westward track, it was upgraded<br />

to a severe tropical storm on 4 November and crossed<br />

Luzon. Then it entered the South China Sea on 5 November<br />

and slowed down. Peipah intensified into a typhoon on<br />

6 November. Peipah turned to move southwestwards<br />

the next day and weakened into a tropical storm on 7<br />

November. After weakening into a tropical depression on<br />

8 November at 18UTC on 8 November, it hit the southern<br />

part of Vietnam on 10 November and then dissipated at<br />

18UTC the same day.<br />

TAPAH (0722) formed as a tropical depression over the<br />

sea south of Iwojima Island on 11 November and moved<br />

generally northeastwards. It intensified into a tropical<br />

storm on 12 November. Tapah weakened into a tropical<br />

depression at 18 UTC the same day and then dissipated<br />

over the sea north of Minamitorishima the next day.<br />

MITAG (0723) formed as a tropical depression over the<br />

sea east of the Philippines on 19 November and moved<br />

generally west-northwestwards. It developed into a<br />

tropical storm on 20 November. Keeping its westerly<br />

track, it intensified into a typhoon on 22 November. It<br />

turned to move northwest on 23 November and crossed<br />

Luzon on 26 November then moved northwestwards.<br />

It gradually weakened into severe tropical storm, then<br />

a tropical storm on the same day. It was downgraded<br />

to a tropical depression and then dissipated on 27<br />

November.<br />

HAGIBIS (0724) formed as a tropical depression over the<br />

sea east of Mindanao Island on 18 November and moved<br />

westward to cross the Philippines on 19 November.<br />

It intensified into tropical storm, then severe tropical<br />

storm on 20 and 21 November. After turning to the<br />

west-northwest, it intensified further into a typhoon on<br />

22 November. Hagibis turned to move the east on 23<br />

November and then weakened into tropical storm on 25<br />

November. After crossing the central Philippines on 27<br />

November, it weakened into a tropical depression and<br />

dissipated over the sea east of Luzon the next day.<br />

Of the 15 tropical cyclones affecting the Members of<br />

<strong>Typhoon</strong> <strong>Committee</strong>, disastrous events occurred in<br />

China, Republic of Korea, the Philippines, Japan and<br />

Vietnam. List of tropical cyclones affecting Members of<br />

the <strong>Typhoon</strong> <strong>Committee</strong> is shown on table 2.1.2., and list<br />

of casualties and damage sustained by Members of the<br />

<strong>Typhoon</strong> <strong>Committee</strong> due to tropical cyclones in <strong>200</strong>7 is<br />

shown on table 2.1.3.<br />

In China, the economic losses caused by typhoons<br />

were less severe compared with the last 10 years and<br />

the least severe one in the past 4 years. According to<br />

the preliminary statistics, more than 27 million people<br />
