When he was elected as a member of the WMO Executive<br />

Council (EC) during the 15th World Meteorological<br />

Congress, Mr. Man-Ki Lee, Administrator of the KMA,<br />

pledged KMA’s further expanded contribution to the<br />

capacity building of in particular developing countries in<br />

meteorological and hydrological services (Fig. 1.5).<br />

Tropical Cyclones (JWTC) every year from <strong>200</strong>8 (Fig.<br />

1.6).<br />

As part of efforts to meet the expected role, KMA is<br />

planning to expand the scope of training areas and the<br />

number of trainees from developing countries and will<br />

actively participate in the WMO Voluntary Cooperation<br />

Programme by increasing its contribution of funding and<br />

in kind.<br />

The ninth session of the joint working group in the field<br />

of Meteorology between KMA and CMA<br />

The Ninth Session of the joint Working Group on<br />

Cooperation (JWG-9) in the field of Meteorology between<br />

KMA and the China Meteorological Administration (CMA)<br />

was held from 10 to 12 October <strong>200</strong>7 in Seoul. At the<br />

session both sides decided to hold Joint Workshop on<br />

right and Mr. Shen Xiaonong, Deputy<br />

Administrator of CMA) of the session signed<br />

on the summary report<br />

As a follow-up to JWG-9, several KMA experts were sent<br />

to the Shanghai <strong>Typhoon</strong> Institute from 6 to 9 November<br />

<strong>200</strong>7 in order to participate in the 14th National Workshop<br />

on Tropical cyclones (NWTC-XIV) of China, where they<br />

had a working-level discussion about some practical<br />

issues such as agenda to be addressed at the first JWTC<br />

to be held in Seoul, <strong>200</strong>8.<br />

e. Research Progress<br />

Predicting the extratropical transition of typhoons<br />

A number of tropical cyclones usually move into<br />

the midlatitudes and some of them transform into<br />

extratropical cyclones. This process is referred to as<br />

extratropical transition (ET). The storms undergoing ET<br />

experience an asymmetric thermal structure with the<br />

approach into the baroclinic midlatitude environment<br />
