<strong>The</strong> president recognized the Rev. Ben Campbell, Richmond Hill, who noted that we<br />

ought to be asking the eight original tribes <strong>of</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> for permission to be here. He noted<br />

that Chief Ken Adams honored <strong>Council</strong> with his presence, and said that this resolution<br />

had nothing to do with gambling, but with proper honor for Native Americans.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re was no further discussion. <strong>The</strong> president called for the vote. <strong>The</strong> motion was<br />

carried and R-5a was adopted with recommended additions.<br />

Mr. Hobson introduced R-6 regarding payday lending and moved for its adoption<br />

as submitted.<br />

<strong>The</strong> president recognized the Rev. Tom Holliday, retired, who noted that he wasn’t aware<br />

that payday lenders had been granted exception to the state’s usury laws. He stated that<br />

he was angry, and noted that members <strong>of</strong> <strong>Council</strong> do not usually leave with any anger<br />

unless it is over a matter <strong>of</strong> sexuality.<br />

<strong>The</strong> president recognized Mr. Hobson, who noted that the resolution existed because<br />

some people were angry.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re was no further discussion. <strong>The</strong> president called for the vote. <strong>The</strong> motion was<br />

carried and R-6 was adopted as recommended.<br />

Mr. Hobson introduced R-7 regarding Sudan leadership and support and moved for its<br />

adoption as submitted.<br />

<strong>The</strong> president recognized the Rev. Lauren Stanley, missionary in Sudan, who noted that<br />

she was speaking on behalf <strong>of</strong> Russ Randle. She said that the Sudanese Church was<br />

vowing to walk with the Episcopal Church during its troubles because we walked with<br />

them during their war, and noted that to hear that the <strong>Diocese</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> is partnering<br />

with them and supporting them would give the Sudanese strength.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re was no further discussion. <strong>The</strong> president called for the vote. <strong>The</strong> motion was<br />

carried, and R-7 was adopted as recommended.<br />

Mr. Hobson introduced R-8a regarding Sudan divestment, and moved for its adoption<br />

with additions.<br />

<strong>The</strong> president recognized the Rev. Lauren Stanley, missionary to Sudan, who thanked<br />

the <strong>Diocese</strong> for support on behalf <strong>of</strong> Sudan, and asked <strong>Council</strong> to “put your money where<br />

your mouth is.”<br />

<strong>The</strong> president recognized the Rev. Ed Miller, St. John’s, McLean, who <strong>of</strong>fered particular<br />

resources for the purpose <strong>of</strong> supporting the resolution on the Episcopal Church Web site.<br />

<strong>The</strong> president recognized Mr. Ed Rhodes, All Saints’, Richmond, who stated that the<br />

Senate bill had cleared the Senate and was now in the House <strong>of</strong> Delegates.<br />
