Resolutions<br />

David’s, Aylett and Church <strong>of</strong> the Creator, Mechanicsville, for which he was<br />

the founding rector; and<br />

Whereas, Mr. Townsend served as a chaplain in the <strong>Virginia</strong> National Guard from 1947<br />

until 1977, when he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel; and<br />

Whereas, Mr. Townsend, after his retirement in 1977, was an active member <strong>of</strong> Trinity,<br />

Lancaster, and a dedicated and inspirational part <strong>of</strong> the Body <strong>of</strong> Christ at<br />

Trinity until his death, giving generously <strong>of</strong> his time, talent and treasure to<br />

assure the future <strong>of</strong> Trinity; and<br />

Whereas, Mr. Townsend served his Lord, his church and his country with loyalty,<br />

generosity and vision and was dedicated to the growth and future <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Episcopal Church; now therefore be it<br />

Resolved, that the 213 th <strong>Council</strong> <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Diocese</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> joins with Region II and<br />

Trinity Episcopal Church, Lancaster County, <strong>Virginia</strong> in expressing their<br />

heartfelt thanks for the ministry <strong>of</strong> the Rev. Morton Townsend and in<br />

celebrating his life among us.<br />

CR-5 Mr. Sture G. Olsson<br />

As adopted by the 213 th <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Council</strong>.<br />

Whereas, Sture Gordon Olsson, a life-long member <strong>of</strong> St. John’s Episcopal Church, West<br />

Point, died on September 10, 2007, at age 87; and<br />

Whereas, Sture Gordon Olsson served as a member <strong>of</strong> the vestry at St. John’s and a<br />

pillar <strong>of</strong> the congregation, regularly attending worship, <strong>of</strong>ten accompanied by<br />

his favorite canine companion; and<br />

Whereas, Sture Gordon Olsson generously supported the <strong>Diocese</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> and its<br />

bishops; and<br />

Whereas, Sture Gordon Olsson was an honored graduate and a trustee <strong>of</strong> Episcopal<br />

High School, receiving the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1992 in<br />

recognition <strong>of</strong> his service, and served as a trustee <strong>of</strong> St. Margaret’s School,<br />

Tappahannock; and<br />

Whereas, Sture Gordon Olsson’s long and distinguished career in the paper and forest<br />

products industry was marked by a deep concern for the environment and a<br />

commitment to sound ethics in business; now therefore be it<br />

Resolved, that the 213 th <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Council</strong> <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Diocese</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> celebrates the<br />

long, committed and dedicated life <strong>of</strong> Sture Gordon Olsson as a <strong>Virginia</strong><br />

Episcopalian and as a member <strong>of</strong> St. John’s Episcopal Church, West Point,<br />

gives thanks for his life and works, and expresses condolences to his family;<br />

and be it further<br />

Resolved, that the secretary <strong>of</strong> this <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Council</strong> send a copy <strong>of</strong> this resolution to the<br />

widow <strong>of</strong> Sture Gordon Olsson.<br />

CR-6 <strong>The</strong> Rt. Rev. Victoria Matthews<br />

As adopted by the 213 th <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Council</strong>.<br />

Resolved, that the 213 th <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Council</strong> <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Diocese</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> gives thanks to the<br />

services chaplain <strong>of</strong> this <strong>Council</strong>, the Rt. Rev. Victoria Matthews, bishop<br />

in residence <strong>of</strong> Wycliffe College and former bishop <strong>of</strong> Edmonton. We are<br />

grateful for her mirroring Christ to us through her presence and through her<br />

meditations, and wish her safe travel home.<br />
