A B S T R A C T S THURSDAY, JULY 1 N A N O S E A 2 0 1 0 2 – Abstract Many efforts have been done to find techniques that allow forming a metal layer under ambient conditions, avoiding the aforementioned problems. A possible solution is to operate in liquid phase at room temperature and pressure using metal nanoparticles (NPs) in colloidal solution. The peculiar physic-chemical properties of NPs make them suitable as precursors for metal electrodes. In the literature some procedures for the deposition of metal NPs by drop casting and ink-jet methods on many kinds of substrates, both inorganic (silica, mica, HOPG) and organic (commercial polymers and molecular organic thin films) are described; however, to our best knowledge, very few works concern the deposition of metal NPs on organic molecular single crystals. In this work we describe the deposition of gold NPs from colloidal solution on crystals of tetrafluoroacridines to evaluate the specific reactivity of organic crystal surfaces versus gold. In particular, two iso-structural crystals have been considered: the first one exposes a large number of sulfur atoms just underneath the largest crystal face and the second one exposes the same number per surface area of oxygen atoms. The deposition of NPs has been carried out at room temperature by drop-casting, depositing a precise volume drop and removing it after a settled time. Samples have been characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM) to evaluate coverage, self-assembly dynamics and aggregate dimensions. 3 – Conclusion While tetrafluoro-7-methoxyacridine crystals show no propensity to induce a self-assembly of gold NPs, a uniform distribution of NPs has been obtained on tetrafluoro-7-thiomethylacridine crystal surface, thanks to the presence of sulfur atoms on the surface. By increasing deposition time, the amount of NPs on the crystal surface increases; moreover, the quantity of NPs adsorbed on the crystal surface is related to NP size. 115
