Bus services<br />

Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) manages school bus<br />

services, and they charge children 80p for each journey.<br />

To find details of school routes and other bus services, you can use our website at<br />

www.wigan.gov.uk which has links <strong>to</strong> other sites. You can also get leaflets from<br />

<strong>Wigan</strong> and Leigh bus stations. For more information, phone GMPTE on<br />

0161 228 7811 or use GMPTE’s website at www.gmpte.gov.uk.<br />

Help with travel<br />

We will provide a free travel pass for children aged under 11 who have <strong>to</strong> travel more<br />

than two miles <strong>to</strong> their nearest available school. We will measure this by a<br />

reasonable walking route. We will not offer help if your child goes <strong>to</strong> a school more<br />

than two miles away and there is a school nearer with a place available.<br />

How we will measure the distances<br />

We will measure the two-mile limit along the nearest and shortest suitable walking<br />

route.<br />

You can get claim forms from the school or the Integrated Transport Unit.<br />

Sustainable school travel<br />

The school run adds around 20% more cars <strong>to</strong> early-morning traffic. For many<br />

parents, children and young people, the journey <strong>to</strong> school or college is ideally suited<br />

for walking, cycling or using buses and trains.<br />

Our ‘Sustainable Modes of Travel Strategy’ encourages children and young people<br />

in the area <strong>to</strong> change their behaviour and attitudes <strong>to</strong>wards school travel. Section<br />

508A of the Education Act means all local authorities are responsible for promoting<br />

the use of sustainable (environmentally friendly) travel and transport for children and<br />

young people of sixth-form age and below. This covers not only those children and<br />

young people who live in <strong>Wigan</strong> borough, but also those who live outside the area<br />

and travel in<strong>to</strong> <strong>Wigan</strong> for education and training.<br />

The Local Transport Plan recognises the benefits for the environment, as well as the<br />

benefits for children’s health and well-being, by encouraging walking and cycling. It<br />

also aims <strong>to</strong> tackle built-up traffic around schools and make it easier for children and<br />

young people <strong>to</strong> get <strong>to</strong> school.
