Admissions to primary school in 2011 to 2012
Transfer between primary schools
If you want to change your child’s school, you should consider this decision very
carefully. It is normally in your child’s best interests to stay at the same school, as
changing schools can cause an unnecessary break in the child's education. If your
child is having problems, a change of school is not always the answer. You should
discuss any concerns with your child’s head teacher before you apply for a different
school.
If you are thinking of moving house and this means your child would have to change
school, there may not be places available at the school you want. The School
Places Team will be able to tell you which schools are full or have places available.
Some schools are full in all or most year groups and we cannot guarantee there will
be a place available in the area you want to move to.
How to apply for a school transfer
Wigan residents
Wigan Council’s School Places Team deals with applications to transfer schools.
If you are a Wigan resident and you want to apply for a school transfer, please
complete the Wigan Council in-year application form. This form is available on the
Wigan Council website at www.wigan.gov.uk or from the School Places Team by
phoning 01942 486040.
You can name up to three schools in order of priority, either in Wigan or another
local authority. If you name a school in another local authority area we will deal with
the other authority for you. We will write to let you know that we have received your
application against their faith criteria.
If any of your preferred schools is a voluntary-aided (church) school, you will
need to fill in the school’s own supplementary information form and return it
with your Wigan Council in-year application form. You can get a copy of the
supplementary form from our website at www.wigan.gov.uk, from the School Places
Team or from the school. If you do not fill in the school’s own supplementary
information form, the school will not have all the information they need to consider
your application against their faith criteria.
We will write to let you know the result of your application. All schools have an
admission number for each year group. If we cannot offer you a place at the school
you want and you live in Wigan, we will offer you a place at another school. You
may want to keep your child at their current school. You have the right to appeal if
we refuse you a place at a school. For more information on appeals, see page
We do not keep waiting lists for transfers during a school year. If you have appealed
for a place at a school and a place becomes available before your appeal is heard
your application will be considered alongside any other applications for that school.
It is important that your child continues to attend their current school until a
transfer date has been arranged.
