<strong>Admission</strong> criteria<br />
The Governing Body will admit all children having statements of special educational need in<br />
whose statement the school is named.<br />
In the event of oversubscription the following criteria will be applied:<br />
1. Children in public care (Looked After Children)<br />
2. Baptised children whose parent(s)/guardian(s) are regular worshipping members of<br />
Ather<strong>to</strong>n St. George’s Church. (Validated by Clergy)<br />
3. Children who will have a brother or sister attending the school at the time of admission.<br />
4. Baptised or dedicated children whose parent(s)/guardian(s) are in regular attendance at a<br />
church which is a member of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland, or a local<br />
Churches Together organisation.<br />
5. Children with proven special educational, medical or social needs, whom the Governors<br />
believe would benefit from a place in<strong>to</strong> this, their nearest school.<br />
6. Children resident in the conventional district of St. George’s within the parish of Ather<strong>to</strong>n.<br />
In the event of a split decision, distance taken from home <strong>to</strong> school main entrance,<br />
measured in a straight line as determined by LA.<br />
7. All other children<br />
Notes:<br />
a) Regular attendance will be taken <strong>to</strong> mean a minimum of monthly attendance at church, at<br />
public worship, for at least the year prior <strong>to</strong> 1st September in the year before admission <strong>to</strong> the<br />
school. Evidence of infant baptism or dedication of the child and of regular attendance of<br />
parent(s)/guardian(s) must be provided by a member of the clergy or other designated church<br />
officer on the form provided.<br />
b) Where admission is sought under special educational, medical or social circumstances<br />
criteria, professional supporting evidence, eg. from a doc<strong>to</strong>r, psychologist or social worker, is<br />
essential. Such evidence must set out the particular reasons why the school is the most<br />
suitable for the child and the difficulties that would be caused if the child had <strong>to</strong> attend another<br />
school.<br />
c) ‘Brother’ or ‘sister’ includes half, foster and adopted brothers or sisters living at the same<br />
address and full brother or sister living apart.<br />
d) Parents can request that the date their child is admitted <strong>to</strong> the school is deferred until later in<br />
the school year or until the child reaches compulsory school age in that school year. Where<br />
entry is deferred, the place will be held open and not offered <strong>to</strong> another child. Parents cannot<br />
defer entry beyond the beginning of the term after the child’s fifth birthday, nor beyond the<br />
academic year for which the original application was accepted.<br />
e) Parents can request that their child attends part-time until the child reaches compulsory<br />
school age.
