THE USA.
The threat caused by cyber attacks is also
growing for Turkey day by day. The research
report of Trend Micro for the second quarter
of 2014 has revealed that Turkey is the sixth
most frequently targeted country by cyber
attacks. The data presented by Arbor
Networks shows that the cyber attacks
against Turkey is above the global average.
As a matter of fact, while there has been a
68% decrease in cyber attacks worldwide, the
cyber attacks against Turkey has increased
6%.
BREAKING POINT IN THE CYBER SECURITY
PERCEPTION: OPERATION STUXNET
The Stuxnet virus which has suspended the
operations of the Busehr Nuclear Facility in
Iran and is designated as the first cyber
weapon worldwide was a significant breaking
point in the cyber security perception. As
a very smart software, Stuxnet infected the
computer system which controlled the operation
of the Busehr facility and corrupted the
software being used for controlling the centrifuges.
Even though it was declared that
nuclear programs were not damaged, it is
known that the damage is around $800 million.
The operation Stuxnet means much more
than a cyber-attack due to the damage it
caused. It is observed that this very complex
virus had been supported by governments
and intelligence agencies and it was a work of
long term endeavors of a large and professional
team. Moreover, the target of the virus
was predetermined. The virus directly targeted
the production system which is a critical
infrastructure element; and after infecting
the system, it did not reveal itself until it
detected the Siemens PLC system and then it
seized the control of the program.
THE CYBER ATTACKS AGAINST SAUDI
ARAMCO AND KHARG
Besides the Operation Stuxnet, the cyber
attacks against Saudi Aramco oil company
which meets 10% of the world oil supply and
by Kharg oil refinery which is considered as
one of the fundamental elements of Iranian
oil economy reveal how fragile is the oil and
natural gas industry against cyber attacks.
The cyber-attack through the “Shamoon”
virus suffered by Aramco, one of the most
important corporations in the world by its oil
production capacity, is being perceived as a
very critical development in terms of its
potential damage in the global economy. It is
stated that the oil production is not affected
