6) A visit by 84 SMa members to the
Deep Tunnel Sewerage System
(DTSS) @ Changi. This took place on
29 July 2005 and was co-organised
with the Public Utilities Board (PUB).
The visit included a short presentation
on DTSS which informed members on
how DTSS acts as a “closing loop” to
channel used water to the Water
Reclamation Plants for treatment and
conversion into Newater. The
importance of Newater and its uses
were also highlighted to members. A
site visit took place at DTSS after the
presentation.
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT
SYSTEMS SUB-COMMITTEE (EMS
SUB-COMM)
At its meeting in January 2005, the EHSS
FC established its fi rst Sub-Committee to
address the practice of environmental
management of the local small & medium
enterprises (SMEs). The EMS Sub-Comm
was tasked to establish a basic EMS
programme (using Responsible Care as a
base) which SMEs can easily adopt. The
aim is to create an awareness of
environmental management system and
best practices for small companies,
through SMa, and thereafter to lead them
towards ISO 14000. The project was led
by Mr Hans Pijnenburg of ExxonMobil
Chemical Operations Pte Ltd.
The EMS Sub-Comm met regularly in the
course of the year to draft an EMS Guide
for local SMEs. The Guide is targeted to
be released to SMa members in the
second quarter of 2006.
To gain fi rst-hand knowledge of the
problems faced by companies and how
companies implement their environment
system and policies, three factory visits (to
O.E. Manufacturing Pte Ltd, That’s
Electroplating Pte Ltd and Gardenia Foods
(S) Pte Ltd) were arranged in May 2005.
In addition, a seminar on “Incorporating
EMS Into Your Business” was organised
on 28 October 2005. A total of 24
participants attended the half-day seminar.
The seminar gave an overview of EMS, the
basic steps needed in implementation and
its potential advantages. The seminar also
showcased the expertise of EDC@SMa’s
consultants in this fi eld and allowed the
Sub-Comm to gauge the response of the
companies in implementing EMS. A
member company was identifi ed to
participate in the pilot scheme to help fi netune
the EMS Guide before its release to
SMa members in 2006.
SECURITY & TERRORISM
In the light of potential terrorist threats and
attacks, the FC collaborated with the
Singapore Police Force (SPF) & the
National Security Coordination Secretariat
to organise a large-scale security
conference involving senior ministerial staff
in January 2006. Complimenting this
major focus on terrorist threat and security,
the SPF has distributed a handbook
entitled “Guide to Securing Organisation’s
Security” to the FC. The contents of this
guidebook were disseminated via SMa’s
website for the benefi t of its members.
