GS1 SINGAPORE COUNCIL<br />

Besides providing article numbering, technical assistance and<br />

education on the application of EAN.UCC bar code systems to the<br />

industry, GS1 <strong>Singapore</strong> Council also operates the <strong>Singapore</strong> Cold<br />

Chain Centre and actively promotes the use of radio frequency<br />

identifi cation tags (or RFID).<br />

Highlights of the event:<br />

<strong>Singapore</strong> Article Number Council has been<br />

renamed to GS1 <strong>Singapore</strong> Council following<br />

the transformation of EAN International and<br />

the Uniform Code Council to GS1 in February<br />

<strong>2005</strong>. The new name signifi es a unifi ed global<br />

organization with a unifi ed purpose to undertake<br />

the mission in line with the global GS1, which<br />

is to enhance the supply and demand chain<br />

by creating and implementing open, global,<br />

multi-sectoral standards based on best business<br />

practices. The name change not only strengthens<br />

our global network to keep abreast of the latest<br />

supply chain developments on next-generation<br />

services and enabling technologies, such as<br />

Global Data Synchronization and the Electronic<br />

Product Code/Radio Frequency Identifi cation<br />

technologies but also enhances the existing<br />

diversifi ed services portfolio to fulfi ll<br />

evolving needs.<br />

Mr Tan Jin Soon was invited to be a member of<br />

GS1 Advisory Council. Other GAC members<br />

include USA, Canada, UK, Finland, France,<br />

Germany, Belgium, China, India, Japan, Hong<br />

Kong, <strong>Singapore</strong>, Poland, Croatia, Brazil<br />

and Colombia.<br />

For <strong>2005</strong>, a total of three GS1 Advisory<br />

Council Meetings were held. The main issues<br />

discussed at these Advisory Council Meetings<br />

were EPCglobal Implementation; Global Data<br />

Synchronization Network Implementation; the<br />

<strong>Annual</strong> Budget of GS1; and EPCglobal and the<br />

Role of GS1 Head Offi ce and GS1<br />

Country Organisations.<br />

in January <strong>2005</strong> to advise GS1 Head Offi ce on<br />

policy matters. Members of GAC are selected<br />

from CEO of GS1 country organizations who<br />

have previously contributed to the growth and<br />
