The presenter, Mr Martin Vilsoe, educated
members on risk management practices
such as compliance, people, technology
and change management risks. He
described the possible causes and
effects of these risks and showed ways to
effectively identify, manage, mitigate and
contain the problems that arise.
Under the National Environment Agency
(NEA)’s Code of Practice on Pollution
Control, companies engaging in onsite
activities that can cause pollution
are legally required to conduct a site
assessment study on the extent of
land contamination if their site is to be
redeveloped, re-zoned or re-used for a
non-pollutive activity. With that in mind, the
MME IG Programmes sub-committee and
the Singapore Surface Finishing Society
(SSFS) jointly organised a presentation
by Ms Elizabeth Lee of Setsco Pte Ltd on
“An Introduction to Environmental Baseline
Studies” on 9 June 2005 to inform and
equip members on pollution control.
Companies looking for funds to expand
overseas or embark on projects in
emerging markets were introduced to
additional funding sources from German
Capital. MME IG chairman invited Mr
Julian Sandt and Ms Philomene Ngui from
Germancapital Pte Ltd to give a talk
on “Financing from Governmental
Developmental Institutions” on 14 July
2005. They revealed plausible sources
of long-term capital from European
institutional investors for reputable Asian
companies.
To foster interaction and networking
between MME IG and other IG members,
eager golfers teed off on 28 July 2005
at Jurong Country Club (JCC) for the
SMa MME Golf Challenge 2005. Golfers
were later treated to a sumptuous dinner
cum prize presentation ceremony. The
winner for Best Gross in 2004, Mr Lau
Koi Fong from Kenwood Industries Pte
Ltd, successfully defended his title with
an excellent gross score of 87. Mr Ochiai
Yoshio from SOXAL was the winner for
Best Stableford with 37 points.
The MME IG committee invited Dr Phil
Miller of Essential Quality Systems, Inc.
Bloomington Minnesota, USA and an
Honorary Fellow of the Plastics and
Rubber Institute of Singapore to speak
on the International Automotive Industry
Quality Requirements, particularly the
ISO/TS-16949 Standard, on 5 December
2005. The ISO/TS-16949 Standard
promotes the adoption of a customeroriented
process approach when
developing, implementing and improving
the effectiveness and effi ciency of a Quality
Management System. A well known
academician, Dr Miller have worked closely
with Dr W. Edwards Deming, the leading
quality guru in the US and father of the
Japanese post-war industrial revival.
The MME IG committee also invited
guests from statutory boards such as IE
Singapore to committee meetings during
the year to update on governmental
regulations and programmes that aid
businesses.
