To cap GS1 Singapore Council’s achievement, its Executive
Director, Tan Jin Soon, was awarded the SPRING Outstanding
Achievement Award In Standardisation at the 2005 World
Standards Day Celebration in September.
Established in 2004, the SMa School of Management (SOM)
has grown from strength to strength. The SOM recorded a
commendable three-digit percentage growth in total income
for the year 2005.
SOM’s reputation was substantially elevated following the
award of the CaseTrust for Education accreditation by the
Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE). CaseTrusted
schools are reputed for providing quality programmes and
student welfare and observing sound business practices.
Cementing its position as a major player in the private
education industry, SOM added 7 new programmes in 2005
and is notably the leader in providing training and education
in Environment, Health, Safety and Security and Risk
Management.
SOM enrolled more than 500 students as at the end of 2005
in a wide range of disciplines and at all levels from the
Diploma to the Doctorate level. Its offerings of 2 doctoral, 8
masters, 12 bachelors and over 15 diploma programmes are
comparable to that of a small-sized university in a Western
developed country. Efforts to explore and partner world
renowned universities and educational institutions are also
undertaken to better meet the needs of the industries.
facilitate the exploration and assessment of emerging and
established markets as well as to pave the way for future
collaborations for our members with potential partners in
Indonesia, Pakistan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Taiwan, China and
the Russian Federation.
In addition, SMa also staged or participated in 23 seminars
and exhibitions on cross-border trade and investments. To
widen its reservoir of overseas business contacts to better
serve its members, SMa hosted 24 foreign business
delegations during the year. These delegations hailed from
Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, China, Kazakhstan, India,
Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa, Panama and Wales.
Going the extra mile to create more networking opportunities
for members, SMa organized an average of three networkingcum-information
dissemination sessions per month in 2005.
The theme for these events varied from Business Technology
and Credit Management at one end to Wine Appreciation and
Traditional Chinese Medicine at the other end to cater to a
huge membership base with diverse interests.
We, at SMa, are far from resting on our laurels. We will
continue to strive to meet the needs of our members and
raise our level of service to them in 2006.
Externally, SMa has been active in organizing trade missions
to establish new ties and strengthen existing ones with
overseas business communities and government agencies.
A total of 6 out-going business missions were organized either
solely by SMa or jointly with the other private organizations
and government agencies. These missions sought to
