Appendix B: In<strong>for</strong>mation on receiver types<br />

Un<strong>for</strong>tunately, <strong>the</strong>re can be no up-to-date list<strong>in</strong>g<br />

produced <strong>for</strong> <strong>GNSS</strong> receivers, due to <strong>the</strong> rapid<br />

progression <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>GNSS</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry. However, <strong>for</strong> a<br />

basic equipment type by category list<strong>in</strong>g, Tables<br />

D1 to D3 on pages 11–14, can be <strong>use</strong>d as a guide.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> problems with <strong>GNSS</strong> survey<strong>in</strong>g is<br />

<strong>the</strong> lack <strong>of</strong> an agreed nomenclature <strong>for</strong> receivers<br />

<strong>and</strong> systems. The guidel<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong>re<strong>for</strong>e is to try <strong>and</strong><br />

obta<strong>in</strong> from <strong>the</strong> manufacturer <strong>the</strong> type <strong>of</strong> product<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are really sell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> to place it <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

categories expla<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> section 3, namely:<br />

+ static system<br />

+ dynamic system<br />

+ real-time dynamic system.<br />

Publications such as GPS world, Geomatics world,<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g survey<strong>in</strong>g showcase or GIM (see<br />

Appendix C) <strong>of</strong>ten have one issue per year which<br />

conta<strong>in</strong>s a review <strong>of</strong> <strong>GNSS</strong> receivers, or a buyer’s<br />

guide. It is recommended that <strong>in</strong>dependent sources<br />

such as <strong>the</strong>se publications are consulted be<strong>for</strong>e<br />

purchas<strong>in</strong>g equipment, or when ascerta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

type <strong>of</strong> <strong>GNSS</strong> equipment be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>fered by a<br />

manufacturer or hire company.<br />

A fur<strong>the</strong>r reference could be made to <strong>the</strong> US FGCC<br />

(Federal Geodetic Control Committee) accredited<br />

list<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>GNSS</strong> receivers, <strong>for</strong> detailed specifics on<br />

<strong>GNSS</strong> receiver types <strong>and</strong> precision. Manufacturers<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten submit a test receiver to <strong>the</strong> FGCC, which is<br />

<strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> organisation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> USA <strong>for</strong> test<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

accredit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>GNSS</strong> survey equipment <strong>and</strong> hardware.<br />

It is recommended that be<strong>for</strong>e a receiver is<br />

purchased, <strong>the</strong> list<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>in</strong>spected, or possibly <strong>the</strong><br />

test report is obta<strong>in</strong>ed.<br />

It is not appropriate <strong>for</strong> this document to list <strong>the</strong><br />

most common <strong>and</strong> well-known receivers. The<br />

above publications <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> reviews conta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

<strong>the</strong>re<strong>in</strong> should be consulted to assess <strong>the</strong> most<br />

appropriate receivers <strong>for</strong> a particular type <strong>of</strong> survey.<br />
