world through which change can be implemented.
If instituted, how could
exhibition sites outside the West be promoted to a primary rather than
secondary status
An outline of the proceedings of these roundtable discussions was
presented by the moderators in a plenary session immediately following.
Their summaries are also contained ir1 this publication. From these it was
clear that each roundtable touched on many of the same issues, though
approached them from different perspectives. General themes of inequity
within the art system and imbalance of nations as represented in the art
world was frequently voiced.
The traditional Western-based program was
constantly questioned.
Over and over the need for new types of
international exhibitions and exchanges was expressed, along with the need
for a new terminology to deal with these issues and concepts. And in this
dialogue more voices from the non-Western world, it was evident, are
needed and will hopefully be heard in future conferences.
Though seemingly coming from differing points of view and, in fact,
from different parts of the world, many participants surprisingly found
that their interests coincided and that they faced the same problems in
bringing about change.
This bond, in part, was due to a growing
connection and communication between art professionals around the world.
Each delegate, too, in being selected with same criteria in mind, shared
some common experience and attitudes that allowed for ready discussion.
For the most part they represented a generation seeking to change the
status quo.
