Second, Arts International also manages a number of other fellowships,
travel grants, internships, and exchange programs, including the prestigious
Cintas Fellowships which provide grants of $10,000 to Cuban expatriate artists
around the world.
Third, within the United States, Arts International is a primary
clearinghouse for information about international arts. We maintain data on
sources of support for international arts projects and on international
festivals and exhibitions. We also publish reports and books that provide
information to U.S. artists interested in working internationally.
In addition to these activities, Arts International has a very serious
advocacy agenda aimed at creating a U.S. policy on cultural exchange and
increasing government and private-sector support for international work.
Led
by Mr. Messer, Arts International's Advisory Committee works toward these
goals in cooperation with prominent national leaders from the public and
private $ectors.
Arts International also has become, somewhat by accident, a conference
organizer. From time to time, an issue presents itself to us that we and our
~nsors believe cries out for intelligent analysis and discussion and we find
ourselves convening a conference.
This conference is--as its title suggests--concerned with expanding and
redefining the structure and goals of international exhibitions.
Traditionally, international exhibitions have been grouped by national
definition. But perhaps the time has come to introduce new models.
As you know, it has become increasingly difficult to label artists
bycountry and we have all become increasingly sensitive to the inherent
hierarchy and cultural biases such a system encourages.
