6.3 Retirement & Sick Leave Conversion Upon Retirement
All employees of the agency are required to participate in the Ohio Public Employees
Retirement System (PERS). Currently, an employee of the agency who has passed his
sixtieth (60th) birthday and has five (5) or more years of total service credit; or who has
attained his fifty-fifth (55th) birthday and has twenty-five (25) or more years of service
credit; or has thirty (30) or more years of total service credit, regardless of age, is eligible
for retirement in PERS.
An employee of the agency may elect at the time of retirement (service or disability)
from active service, provided he or she has ten (10) or more years service with the agency,
the County, the State of Ohio, any political subdivision of the State of Ohio, or any
combination of the above, to receive cash payment for one-fourth (1/4) the value of his or
her properly accrued and unused sick leave.
The maximum payment which will be permitted is one-fourth of 240 days, or sixty
(60) days. This sick leave conversion payment shall be based on the employee=s rate of
pay at the time of retirement, shall eliminate all sick leave accrued by the employee and
shall be made only once to any employee. To be eligible for such payment, the retiring
employee must be age 65 or older and have a minimum of ten (10) years of county service;
at least age 60 and have a minimum of fifteen (15) years of county service; at least age 55
and have a minimum of twenty (20) years of county service; and at least age 50, and have
a minimum of twenty-five (25) years of county service.
Such benefit is payable to the heirs, representative, or estate of an eligible deceased
employee as of the date of death.
