Staff WORKING for Patients The majority of Taranaki DHB staff members are employed in Hospital and Specialist Services, providing a range of inpatient, outpatient and community based health services across many different specialities. Good Relationships Key To Taranaki’s Cervical Screening Success Taranaki’s Cervical Screening Programme consistently tops national statistics in every category. Latest figures shows 88.6 per cent of all eligible women in Taranaki and 67.5 per cent of Māori women have had a smear in the last three years. The national figures are 76.1 and 55.4 per cent respectively. The Cervical Screening Programme has good relationships with local GPs and practice nurses. Staff go out of their way to respond quickly to queries and make a point of thanking nurses and providers who go the extra mile to make sure a woman has a smear. PUEA - Persistent Pain Management Taranaki DHB’s Persistent Pain Service, Pain Management Programme (PUEA), offers a different way of handling pain for our patients. This is done through the cognitive behavioural approach of an interdisciplinary team comprising of Pain Specialists/Anaesthetists, a Physiotherapist, a Clinical Psychologist, and a PUEA Coordinator/Pain Educator. PUEA means ‘to rise up’ and the initials stand for Pain, Understanding, Exercise and Adapt.
page 27 Technology Connects Patients with Specialists VIP – Staff Wearing T- Shirts Virtual medicine has arrived in Taranaki, allowing patients to connect with specialists from other areas without having to travel out of town. A telemedicine dermatology pilot clinic has been set up which involves patients and specialists communicating via teleconference, enabling health care at a distance. Feedback from patients has been positive, many saying they feel very comfortable and find it easy to ask questions using this medium. Taranaki DHB staff have taken the initiative to support the Family Violence Intervention Programme (FVIP) by wearing Family Violence It’s Not OK! T-shirts one Friday every month. The Violence Intervention Programme (VIP) is a national programme funded by Ministry of Health to develop policies, procedures, systems, supports and training for staff when family violence issues become known to health services.
