Background<br />
<br />
In the early years (circa mid-to-late 1990s), onl<strong>in</strong>e learn<strong>in</strong>g development and deployment content<br />
were essentially onsite classroom curriculum placed <strong>in</strong> electronic files (i.e., Word, PDF,<br />
PowerPo<strong>in</strong>t) and placed <strong>in</strong> a virtual classroom space. Today this would be described as an e-<br />
library <strong>of</strong> documents or an e-document warehouse. This was not necessarily effective onl<strong>in</strong>e<br />
learn<strong>in</strong>g; however, it was the first iteration or generation, as practitioners and educators were<br />
forag<strong>in</strong>g new territory. Developed <strong>in</strong> late 2003, the <strong>in</strong>itial proposition <strong>of</strong> the Effective e-Learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Model (e2L) centered on formulat<strong>in</strong>g a foundation by which creators <strong>of</strong> onl<strong>in</strong>e learn<strong>in</strong>g content<br />
could operate. The foundation consisted <strong>of</strong> p<strong>in</strong>po<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g the fundamental elements that enable the<br />
learn<strong>in</strong>g process, coupled with quality <strong>of</strong> content as key <strong>in</strong>dicators <strong>of</strong> onl<strong>in</strong>e learn<strong>in</strong>g success<br />
(Boehle, 2005). The e2L model was created by the management team <strong>of</strong> a grow<strong>in</strong>g e-learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
solutions and services provider, with each member <strong>of</strong> the team br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g a broad background <strong>in</strong><br />
onl<strong>in</strong>e learn<strong>in</strong>g, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and development, and education. Figure 1 reflects the <strong>in</strong>itial e2L model.<br />
