the content as the primary driver <strong>in</strong> the experience, and the group comes secondary)<br />
L<strong>in</strong>ear learn<strong>in</strong>g design has been the most common onl<strong>in</strong>e practice <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> design and<br />
development (i.e., complete this section and then move to this section). Decision-tree learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
allows for learners to be routed back to the specific areas where more work is required to move<br />
through the content. It also allows the learner to move forward faster if mastery <strong>of</strong> specific<br />
content items already exists. Analytics around onl<strong>in</strong>e learn<strong>in</strong>g are becom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly<br />
important. In part, this is due to organizations/<strong>in</strong>stitutions provid<strong>in</strong>g the learn<strong>in</strong>g experience, the<br />
learners, as well as govern<strong>in</strong>g and/or accredit<strong>in</strong>g bodies that are start<strong>in</strong>g to seek higher levels <strong>of</strong><br />
validation and verification that learn<strong>in</strong>g is actually occurr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> this learn<strong>in</strong>g medium.<br />

Digital Learn<strong>in</strong>g Assets (DLAs) are <strong>in</strong>teractive learn<strong>in</strong>g objects and are any form <strong>of</strong><br />
content and/or media that have been formatted <strong>in</strong>to a b<strong>in</strong>ary source, which <strong>in</strong>clude the right to<br />
use it for the purpose <strong>of</strong> facilitat<strong>in</strong>g learn<strong>in</strong>g. A digital file without the right to use it is not an<br />
asset. Digital learn<strong>in</strong>g assets are commonly categorized <strong>in</strong> three major groups: textual content<br />
(digital assets), images (media assets) and multimedia (media assets). DLAs are commonly<br />
found <strong>in</strong> onl<strong>in</strong>e learn<strong>in</strong>g (academic course work, corporate tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, etc).<br />
Individual (1) — Group (2) content design and delivery recognizes what has been learned<br />
<strong>in</strong> the last several years regard<strong>in</strong>g the onl<strong>in</strong>e learn<strong>in</strong>g experience (see Figure 3). Onl<strong>in</strong>e learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
is primarily engaged from the <strong>in</strong>dividual “doma<strong>in</strong>” (1) <strong>of</strong> th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g and process<strong>in</strong>g first and<br />
foremost, and the group doma<strong>in</strong> (2), i.e., classmates, is an ancillary part <strong>of</strong> the experience.<br />
