4.3.1.2 Groundwater (Fresh)
The policy for the management of ground water storage in Noord-Brabant is defined in the Provincial
Water Plan 2010-2015. The policy is to reserve clean deep groundwater for public water supply, and
protect it against over-exploitation. Deploying targeted policies for different user groups of
groundwater abstraction have been successful. The total amount of groundwater abstracted by drinking
and industrial water suppliers has stabilized during the past 20 years.
Elements of the province’s general policy are defined in paragraph 11.2 of the mentioned ‘Provincial
Water Plan’.
· Groundwater is used for human consumption (public water supply and industrial applications).
Alternatives are needed for other low-value applications.
· The goal is to preserve the quality of groundwater in order to guarantee the long term supply of
public water. The starting point is to withdraw groundwater no deeper than 80 meters.
